Re: Gizmo Peak

The area by the peak itself is fairly popular, particularly with MTBers. The Overlook Fire Road (aka the Backbone Trail) goes right past this peak. Most hikers, however, don't go farther than the intersection of the Ray Miller Trail and the Overlook Fire Road (2.7 miles). https://caltopo.com/map.htm...

The register had an entry that suggested it was a memorial of sorts and asked that it not be disturbed.

Gizmo Peak

Y'all ever heard of Gizmo Peak? Me neither. Until last weekend. The last time I was atop Mugu Peak I looked east at a high point that seemed higher than the 1266' that I was standing on. I'd seen this "peak" before, but never paid it much mind. Now I was curious. So Saturday, I climbed the...

I don't know that there is much real dispute that the earth's atmosphere is a "closed system" as that term is generally defined and understood, is there?

I think it's Spanish broom in your picture there, right? I'm certainly no expert, but I believe you are correct. https://www.calflora.org/cgi-bin/specie ... ecnum=7704 Either way, it is completely out of control. If you listen closely you can hear Vasquez's ghost fleeing from the law on horseback. ...

Re: The Andrew Curtis Tungsten Mine

I know this will probably make me a pariah here, but I think it's bullshit that miners can drag all their crap into the canyons and then just leave it there when their claim has played out or it becomes inconvenient to remove it. In any other context, that would not be tolerated. It certainly wouldn...

Grizzly Flat Trail

I went up the Grizzly Flat trail today from Stonyvale. I've stayed away from this trail previously because I had heard about how overgrown it was. And how much poison oak there was. Poison oak and me don't love each other. One of us always ends up getting hurt, and it ain't the poison oak. But, I sa...

Ok, so my first pic was just a test to see if anyone was paying attention.

I've taken the training wheels off (I think) so y'all can't cheat.

Where am I and what am I looking at?

How was that? Is Gold Creek Road public up to the Boulder Canyon trailhead?

That map's an awesome resource. Thanks for sharing it and for the trail maintenance. The Oak Spring trail was in top shape all the way to Oak Spring.

Speaking of springs, is there any water at Fascination?

Yerba Buena Ridge

Been awhile since I put up a TR so figured I'm about due. Went out last weekend to do some exploring on the west end of the San Gabriels. Since I had been up to the Mendenhall Ridge and out to Kagel, I settled on the Yerba Buena Ridge by way of the Oak Spring Trail. Candidly, I wasn't expecting much...

I've never gone up Lawlor's south face. Looks pretty damn steep to me. The standard route is enjoyable though. The summit is nothing special as you say, but I prefer it to Strawberry which has become too crowded for my anti-social tastes.

Super nice trip. I've been up to the Humphrey's Basin but not further. That snow patch just below the pass was there when I went as well. That whole North Fork Bishop Creek drainage is gorgeous.

Ah, the eternal struggle between oaks and evergreens!
Yeah, the oaks are always fighting with everyone. The maples hate them too.
