Re: Dec. 5th, 2010: 'Experienced' hiker missing on Baldy
I don't usually jump into these discussions, but I just wanted to assure everyone that there were many SAR crews on the mountain Monday. I know because one of those crampon tracks was mine. Yes, by the afternoon, there probably were not any teams walking on the trail, because typical assignments wer...

Re: Technical question: Anyone knows anything about flukes?
I forwarded the photo to our team's snow anchor expert and here is his response: I’ve done pull testing on many different types of snow anchors (including flukes) in many different snowpacks, and the most common failure mode for a fluke is not failure of the wire rope or failure of the blade of the ...

He was also very concerned about the cost of SAR that he or his family might have to pay so he wanted to try and make it out on his own. I'll take this opportunity to chime in. Rescue is free! Please spread the word. This guy could have sustained greater injury during his determined effort to get d...

Re: Baden-Powell to Shoemaker Road: Epic Fail
There are several very proficient SAR people I know of that became aware of the concept...um..."firsthand". The most important skill we look for in applicants is comfort in the mountains - the self-sufficiency to stay out multiple days, hike around off trail, and deal with weather as it co...

Re: Baden-Powell to Shoemaker Road: Epic Fail
I'll take a moment to also jump on this bandwagon. I was one of the Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team members who responded to this call. We were all very happy to see Zach walk safely out of the woods, and no, we don’t mind at all being called out on this kind of operation -- or any kind of opera...

Hi everyone, Our application period is closing for the year very soon, so if you have been thinking about sending one in, please do so. If you don't think it is the right time or hobby for you, tell your friends. We need good mountaineers who know the local area, and most people I see posting here f...

Re: Long free hanging rappels -locally-
The weight on the bottom of the rope in training simulates the weight of the 299ft of rope hanging below your brakehand when you start the real deal. As you go down, that "gravity bottom belay" disappears. If you need to tie off or pass a knot, etc in the middle, you have to know how to de...

Re: Long free hanging rappels -locally-
The place to get beta on long raps is from cavers. There is a SoCal Grotto that meets in Pasadena. You should be able to add, remove, and space bars on your rack while staying under control. Be sure to practice on short drops, and then longer ones with weight added to the rope. If the rope has a cha...

Re: Long free hanging rappels -locally-
Are you practicing for your first long rap, or do you just need to dust off some rust?
A big concern with that length of rappel is heat. What device will you be using?

Re: Sierra Madre Search and Rescue (SMSR) is recruiting!
I guess I should have been more specific. The bear is the one pictured in the Pasadena Star News. The bear was located under a house in Sierra Madre and had been under the house for more than 24 hours. Echo Mt is a considerable distance from Sierra Madre, but I am not familiar with the typical range...

Truck bed tool box for sale - $150
Ultima locking truck bed box for sale. It fits full sized trucks. Comes with two keys, bed rail protection, and universal mounting kit. It is in very good shape; I only used it for two years to securely tote around all my rescue gear (1 pack and 2 duffles, lots of room for stuff).

Re: S&R at Icehouse Canyon?
Sierra Madre Search and Rescue was in Ice House Canyon on a three-day winter training this weekend (Saturday-Monday). We were hoping for lots of weather, but it didn't really get in until Sunday night. As always, we try to train for the worst, so the real thing is easy. So, no real rescues that I kn...

Re: Rescue on Skyline (San Jacinto) by hikers
As a SAR person I would say that inexperienced people may need to call for help in a situation that someone with more experience could deal with. However, they still genuinely need help and it is better for them to call than try to figure something out and get in more trouble or get dead. Rescue is ...
