Re: i need chains

So let me see if I have this straight: Freezing winter weather; gusts of snow blowing across the road; other cars slipping and sliding their way by... You're sitting in a nice flat pullout getting ready to put chains on. Jack the car up. Hmmm, stable... feels okay... Start putting the chain on the f...

Re: Emergency Services Comment

Hey guys... Sorry, no, I didn't take Taco's post as a dig on SAR either. That's why I pointed out that SAR wasn't referred to in his post. Obviously I have some awareness of what the West Valley SAR team is up to. In San Bernardino County there is a very strict policy that you are not allowed to dis...

Emergency Services Comment

the author's confidence in "emergency services personel" involved, with exception going to the towing service, has been severely degraded It will be a VERY cold day in Hell before I'm "rescued" in my mountains I know Search and Rescue wasn't involved in the TC incident referred ...

Re: Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team

Well, I don't know your situation, but you certainly don't need all the required gear straight off. Per WVSAR's training program (and S.B. County's requirements), you'll have lots of training to go through before you are "fieldable". You'll be given information on things you need to get as...

Re: Sierra Madre Search and Rescue Team

Hope you don't mind if I jump on the bandwagon, Barbara... For those of you who don't live within 20 minutes of Sierra Madre, you might be interested in applying with the West Valley SAR team. They're having a recruiting meeting this month. I think it's the night of the 30th at Chino Hills Sheriff S...

Re: Support Your Local Search & Rescue!

Thanks to everyone who turned out and supported West Valley Search and Rescue at their fundraiser on Saturday. (Or, made a donation, or contributed support in any other way.) Apparently they had ~200 runners pre-registered for the 10K and 5K races!! That's not counting walk-ups, of course. Fantastic...

Support Your Local Search & Rescue!

Just thought y'all might like to know: If you hike anywhere in the areas between Mt. Baldy and Lytle Creek, you might want to consider supporting the SAR team that's responsible for that area and for providing you with assistance should you or anyone in your party need it - West Valley Search and Re...

Re: Crampon rentals

Okay, NOOB here, I'll chime in: Ice axes and crampons go together, or not at all. Think about it: Wearing crampons has a certain amount of risk in and of itself. Anyone who's worn them any number of times and hooked a crampon on their pant leg or something and fallen flat on their face can attest to...
