Re: Icehouse to Fontana San Gabriels Linkup

Did it this weekend and that descent to Joe Elliot was absolutely heinous. Close to impassable, we came out extremely cut up. The better route would have been to descend the steep (but grassy and secure-looking) ridgeline / gully into the wash. Honestly even if they trail had been clear it's a prett...

Icehouse to Fontana San Gabriels Linkup

Thinking about linking up some of the peaks between Icehouse and Fontana was wondering if anybody had done this or had recommendations? GPX Here Specifically I'm curious about two things: 1) How heinous is the descent from Etiwanda Peak to Joe Elliot Tree Memorial. 2) How easy is it to exit in the S...

Re: Cattle Canyon view from Ontario

Ah sorry that is a West-looking view straight down Cattle Canyon from hereish. The bottom right is Lookout and the old RV Park. The road snaking along the right side ultimately lands at Thompson Ranch which you can just barely make out.

Cattle Canyon view from Ontario

Ran Ontario this morning and had a decent vantage of the damage in Cattle Canyon / Baldy Basin. Also ran into what looks like one of the fires that started in Icehouse Canyon that was thankfully quickly put out. I've got to imagine the erosion is going to be crazy the next couple winters with nothin...

Re: Bridge Fire

dima wrote: Tue Sep 17, 2024 8:37 am That is a VERY good link. Thanks. The remaining question mark is Widman Ranch, which isn't on that map (yet?) It's in a wider part of the canyon, so maybe it survived. If they're all gone, upper Coldwater Canyon becomes accessible, which would be excellent.
Looks like the map has been updated.

Re: Bridge Fire closures

Closing Mt. Baldy for over a year? That definitely won't last so long. I'd be willing to be they roll this one back pretty quickly along with Devil's backbone if for no other reason than the folks at the resort's income depends on it. Oh and also the fact that the area was totally unimpacted by the...

Re: What burned?

Old RV park at Cow Canyon saddle probably burned. And Thompson Ranch. Iron Fork below where the two forks split burned; above, it did not. https://recovery.lacounty.gov/bridgefire/ Looks like the RV park and its water tower burned and / or were damaged. Several structures at Thompson. It appears th...

Re: Bridge Fire

Things are look a lot calmer at the base of Baldy Canyon. Hoping for rains tonight and greater containment.

Re: Bridge Fire

Not sure if it's jumped the road yet. It looked pretty calm and clear down the canyon this morning around 0600 on my drive out of Claremont area. Far far less smoke than yesterday. Fingers crossed.

Re: Bridge Fire

I'm so sad. I am only living here a year on a temporary assignment; I picked the job and the area for access to the San Gabriels. Got here in May, suffered through this miserable summer - heat wave after heat wave (how do people stand it?) - looking forward to moderate temperatures and full days in ...

Hard to tell what this is. Sunset? Lookout? Taken from Robert J. Bernard Biological Field Station on Foothill.

Re: Bridge Fire

Really hoping it doesn't Baldy Rd. and destroy Ice House / Stoddard / Baldy but seems likely at this point. What are the chances it continues all the way to the end of the San Gabriels?

Re: Frankish Peak via Stoddard

I'll admit It looked a lot more impressive on the map than in person, the run did give some pretty nice views of Turtle / Ontario / Calamity etc. I know I've seen folks mention Turtle on here before and I'm not sure what the approach / route is, but it almost looked like there was a navigable path u...

Frankish Peak via Stoddard

I made an unsuccessful attempt at Frankish peak last Friday (30AUG24) morning around 0730. Stoddard has become a somewhat regular before-work run as it's shaded, has pretty views, and is a quick drive from my home. On a recent run, I found myself curious about the Barrett Stoddard Truck Trail's cont...

Re: Lookout Mountain via Cattle Canyon Viable?

There legally needs to be an easement on the road right? I feel like the owners are skirting the law here. Anyone down to take them to court? I don't have any experience with this kind of thing in CA, but my gut tells me even if one were able to successfully codify the easement, at the end of the d...

Re: Lookout Mountain via Cattle Canyon Viable?

Post a report if you go up there! Sure thing! I'm in the area for the next year or so on a temporary basis and I'm putting together a list of trail run / hike / ski tour / gravel objectives accessible from the Baldy Canyon. Will do my best to write up TRs. This site is such an amazing resource, wis...

Re: Lookout Mountain via Cattle Canyon Viable?

Awesome thank you! I totally missed Girl Hiker's follow-up post and had only seen the post soliciting information . Super cool information on the property history - $20,000 a month is steep! Did somebody call and ask the price? CA land ownership is always so fascinating to me, usually I assume these...

Re: Lookout Mountain via Cattle Canyon Viable?

For those interested the property containing the private road is for rent... Digging into the parcel information ( parcel 1, parcel 2 ) it appears the owners who purchased the property in 2022 triggering a reassessment at $1.6m and $2.2m respectively are now past due on their 2024 tax bill ($4...

Lookout Mountain via Cattle Canyon Viable?

I know from reading here that Lookout Mountain has been pretty much only accessible via Bear Canyon Trail for a while and even then appears like it's some difficult route-finding. From some deeper Googling it sounds like the mountain used to be accessible via Cattle / Cow Canyon (i.e. Glendora Ridge...
