Baldy, lunar New Year hike
Able to pull a hiking day on the Lunar New Year and off I went. Did not know Baldy got may be .5 inch of snow! And I have to hike up with my torn bicycle glove to keep hands warm! Any way the ski hut area was in the cloud all day, and the top was above the cloud and windy. The rain and light snow on...

Have checked the report page for a while, I was surprise to see quite a few of us on this forum went on the same trail in the last month. I took my 9-yr old son Matthew and my friend and his three boys to do climb Whitney the long way, since my friend could not acquired the lottery permit to use the...

Re: Onion Valley to Whitney Portal
Now I remembered that you two passed our group somewhere on the descent to Whitney Portal.
We camped at Trail Camp Friday night and packed out at the usual late 11:30 AM
You are right about the pleasant feeling of day hikes with light pack on our back

Winter break snowshoe on Mt. Rose trail, Nevada
Took family to Reno, Nevada for our annual winter break. Took advantage of being driver to drop my son and niece to Mt Rose Ski area, I tried to hike Mt Rose trail on Dec 30 before the New Year (my son asked me to go ski with them, but I felt my knee saying no!). This year there is lots of snow on t...

Re: Mount Whitney Dayhike - 7/24/2012
Personally I find C2C a little harder than the Whitney day hike, this may be because of the extra preparation that I give to Sierra hikes which makes things go more smoothly. While they both require early starts 2am to 5am for most people, they are of course different animals, C2C has larger elevat...

Re: Insects at Monrovia Peak
Bugs are ususually near the water sources on the Monrovia fire road, once pass White Saddle; it is a lot less bugs. You may run into moutain lion, bobcat, or bear though since there is very little traffic from White Saddel to Monrovia peak.

REI Half Dome 2 tent footprint fails
I have a REI half dome 2 tent plus the foot print for about 2 years. Last two camping trips, I noticed some wet spots between the tent floor and the footprints. Both time the weather was dry, no dew at all. It seems that water seeping through the footprint from the ground. The other theory is conden...

The smoke is thick and choking us in Monrovia this morning. The ash is not bad but the air is nasty. Hope for some breeze to move the smoke out of the valley. However, wind could be bad for fire fighters.

Edward Abbey's fans may get excite about this whole issue.... What makes they think the moutain is "underutilized"? First they want more restrooms than more paved roads then cell phone towers. The list goes on and on. I smell that this issue is related or result of the "economic stimu...

Arcadia wilderness park is relative small compared to Monrovia Canyon park. It is off Highland Oaks. I went because my son took boyscout merit badges classes there.

Sawpit canyon to Monrovia Peak Mountain Bike
Went riding with a buddy with one goal of reaching Monrovia Peak for 1st time. Started around 7:45am and made to short of Monrovia Peak in 2.5 hrs at 8.30 mile. This trail is getting popular for hiker and mountain biker now from the entrance to White Saddle. Was tired and made a mistake to walk up a...

I went up Baldy using the Old Baldy trail Friday morning. It was nice but a little humid. There was cloud forming on top. Saw about 6 people coming up old baldy trail around noon!!!! Had to give them credit for going up in the mid day heat. Took a hearty drank at the spring at the Bear Flat, did not...

Mattmaxon & Enfuego - we were about 10-11 miles in from the West Ford river trail gate off hwy 39 where we encountered the bear. The bear scats were all over the trail at that point. Plenty of water and vegetation in that area. Here is the map showing where that mama bear about (between point B ...

Re: San Gabriel West ford to Cogswell Dam and beyond
Taco,
Just ignore the (No Trespassing) sign on the fence. The gate is open most of the time; I remembered that the only time it was close on the eve of Sep. 11th of that year.
As long as you keep hike/ride on the main trail and keep off some private property driveways; will be Okay.

San Gabriel West ford to Cogswell Dam and beyond
Rode bike with a friend on the west ford to Cogswell Dam and beyond to see how far we could go to reach the Red Box Rincon junction. We went to about 12 mi mark from Hwy 39 so we were about 0.5 to 1 mi from the junction. Weather was nearly perfect for a ride. Saw a bear on the trail and scare the he...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
Snow on high elevation, and rain and hail in Baldy village. I was trying to take family to Manker Flats for kids snowplay. Ended up turn around due to road hazard (not icy but slushy wet road). Cool report and nice snow pictures.
The tent you used looks like an REI 2-person backpacking tent. May I ask how was that tent on the snow? I have a similar tent.
Thanks,
