Re: Interest in Mt Lyell/Parsons Peak?

The first ~8 miles of the trail look to be nearly flat so I'm open to a day hike when the snow burns off. Feel free to DM.

Re: Missing hiker (Monica Reza)

I'm assuming they think it's her beanie (which is what, a wool ski cap?) because they ran a DNA test. I can see local cops skipping that step, but not the FBI (even under Patel).

Assuming @Matthew isn't winding people up, I'd say the cult angle deserves looking into.

*Every* angle deserves looking ...

Re: Missing hiker (Monica Reza)

The thing is is that the yoga group that subjects A, B, and C are in is literally a cult...

This and the Reddit post shed a whole new light on this issue.

Given the general incompetence of governments at all levels, I hope no one is assuming the FBI already knows about something. Anyone who ...

Re: 21 days off, no plans

This is way too easy for OP, but I'd like to bike/hike - at a *very* slow rate - to the Santa Barbara County highpoint before it gets too hot. That's well inland but might be a good side trip.

Re: Missing hiker (Monica Reza)

Later on in the Reddit thread, Pia mentions social media posts where it sounds like they had a group with several regulars, not just 3 or 4 (to avoid scrolling all the way down, sort by Newest).

Lots of hikes on Meetup don't have a sweep. In fact, the largest L.A. hiking Meetup is horrible that way ...

Re: Missing hiker (Monica Reza)

I post events to several Meetup groups and 90% of signups are fake or no-shows. But, maybe that's just me.

I was thinking of going up there on Sat but it looks like the road is closed and I'm not keen on biking or hiking to the trailhead.

Many years ago when the world was young there was concern ...

Re: Missing hiker (Monica Reza)

Non-snowy AllTrails reviews seem to indicate the route isn't obvious to many. I had been under the impression that she was more experienced than it sounds like she was. Maybe she decided to switchback down the steep section and got in over her head. Someone who's petite could be missed inside a hole ...

Re: Baldy is now snow free

Last Sat I did Sierra Madre to Wilson, down to First Water, back up to Orchard Camp, back down to the private road, back up to the start of Charlie's trail where I kinda ran out of gas and daylight, and then back to my car. That was 20.9 miles and I'm hoping that it was a good test even if it's a ...

Re: Baldy is now snow free

Since I'm usually solo (sometimes not by choice), anything involving an ice axe or close to it is out. I hope to do the Mexican volcanoes one of these days but for that I'd have a guide (who could at least wave goodbye if I can't self arrest).

Anyway I'm probably going to try for Rabbit on Sun 4/12 ...

Baldy is now snow free

Earlier today I took Register Ridge up to Baldy and then came down the Backbone and the access road. There were snow patches, but I never touched snow even once. I went up with 4.8L of liquid as training. The route to West Baldy was covered in snow for the most part and a ranger down at the road ...

Re: Missing hiker (Monica Reza)

I'm not familiar with the trail she was on, I haven't really looked into this, etc etc. However, my Jonathan Creek-y possibilities include she was never there, her fellow hikers were involved in her disappearing (either against her will or to help her out), she was snatched by a foreign power (there ...

Also, the kind folks at the antenna farm have run 1/4" cables across the use trail in a few spots. So, watch out for those esp when it's not full sun.

Re: Which Way To Occidental?

Yesterday I did a training hike of Sierra Madre to Mt Wilson carrying 4L of water. As part of the training I wanted to continue on and tried Occidental. First, the AT map isn't really a trailhead, it's just scrambling up a steep dirt embankment from the road. There's somewhat of an old use trail but ...

I don't have much of an interest in reading it because I'm not going near there right now unless I can find an experienced group who'll take it slow, but I'm getting an Access Denied. I don't know if that's because of my IP or because they've changed/lifted the order.

Re: How difficult is the Big Bunny?

I did my test yesterday, turning around 1000' below Villager because I'd reached my turn-around time. When I parked there were two cars in the lot and I soon met both parties in the flattish area so I was all alone. Because of that I was extra cautious and it took ~4.5 hours up, ~3.5 hours down ...

Tip toe through the PDB: Sunset Peak

I hiked Sunset Peak on Sun Feb 15, 2026 via the ridge. I'd never been there before and I was pleasantly surprised to see some rocks just before the summit. Apparently the trail used to go around them but that part washed out. The rocks weren't difficult to get up and around, aside from lots of ...

Re: How difficult is the Big Bunny?

I'm thinking of just going to Villager as a test on Sun Feb 22. That stats look similar to South Kaibab and I did that at night without any issues, but I'm worried about the tread making things harder. In his old post, Bob Burd says you only need tennis shoes for it, but I'm not Bob Burd. If ...

I too am no spring chicken, and I didn't have a problem with things like Rim to River in a day, hiking from Wilson down to the Chantry Flats area and back up, etc. I did White Mountain (the CA 14er) around 20 years ago and I was completely wiped out afterwards: I crawled back into my tent at ...

How difficult is the Big Bunny?

I'm hoping to do Villager + Rabbit Peak with the Sierra Club (I'm not a member) at the end of March.

(ADDED: I'd do this after doing all or almost all of the Rabbit Ramp Up series and I'd do the route that the SC does, presumably the Borrego Springs/Ocotillo Wells side. My main concern is whether I ...

Granite Mtn et Fils

On Jan 11, 2026 I set out to do a loop from the Monte Cristo campground that hits four HPS peaks: Iron #3, Roundtop, Granite, and Rabbit (in that order if you're going counter-clockwise). Both my phones were too low on the fireroad connecting the middle two, so I returned back to the Angeles Forest ...

Santa Monica Mtns closures

On Sat Dec 13, 2025 I tried to hike from the top of Reseda Blvd to Will Rogers State Park but the Backbone Trail is now closed a mile after The Hub when it branches off Fire Road 50. The trail down to Temescal Falls blocked off too. So, I ended up turning around when the Temescal Ridge Trail/El ...

why not just camp down at the bottom and hike out refreshed? best night's sleep I ever got. also had the best beer of my life at phantom ranch.

Re: Grand Canyon all the way in a day

I'd been to the South Rim before but didn't hike down and when I went to the North Rim I only hiked down a little bit. So, I'm no expert, but I think they shut off the water spigots on the Bright Angel trail in the winter. So, even if I'd taken that there *might* not have been a water source. Plus ...

Grand Canyon all the way in a day

On Saturday Nov 29, 2025 I hiked down the South Kaibab trail to Phantom Ranch at the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and then hiked back up the same day. It was strenuous but not overly so: I was able to keep to (what Polar thinks is my) Zone 3 for almost all of the up leg. I'd also trained for this ...

I haven't really looked into this so pardon my uninformed musings, but:

Re: Grand Canyon South Kaibab-Tonto-Bright Angel

I did the same thing on Sun Nov 2, 2025. I saw the road scar but I assume they no longer have the detour, I stayed on the Tonto trail right to BA. I decided not to go to the River because it was quite hot at the Tip-off. I came up BA at night and that was great, although I probably wouldn't do it if ...
