Re: Browns Flat

Your friend had quite the adventure.

He should build a poach trail so his other friends who ride bikes ladened with overnight gear can camp there.

Brown's Flat

Just wanted to share with everyone that Brown's Flat did not burn in the recent fire. Not that I'll ever set foot there. But maybe someday a trail could be rebuilt to allow access?

Sunset Peak's north slopes did mostly burn. Maybe some pines up did high survive...

Brown's Flat- Anybody Been?

Hi all,

I was re-reading the below thread. Anybody try to make it to Brown's Flat in recent years? I may take the mtn bike and eyeball around, but no way I have the juice to actually thrash my way in....

Back on the forum just so I could see what you kids are up to.

Y'all going far deeper in than I very did.

Cool you checked out the Alder Creek trail from Big Tujunga. I see on FB Sean Cucamonga wants to start rehabbing it. He posted up pics from last weekend.

My time was spent 1st on the original ...

Re: The Andrew Curtis Tungsten Mine

I used to hike and camp above Widman Ranch in Coldwater Canyon all the time in the late 70's.

On this thread a few years ago, the mine owner Charles Curtis chimned in. I actually called him soon after just to get a sense for what is going on.
I do not think he will be starting operations back up ...

Re: Monrovia Hillside Wilderness Preserve

Used to be a semi- popular mt bike ride in the late 80's and early 90's..

I do recall some access issues in later years.

Any signs indicating "no mt bikes allowed" now?

Thnx Ellen.

Ya, yikes.

One day after you'd done C2C late November, we hiked down off trail toward Sid David and stumbled onto that spooky shuttered CCC camp. We thought it was illicit pot-growers...

I ponder risk management and age. My particular vice these days has been mt biking. Last year I ...

Re: Here we go again - More snow rescues

I read the San Jac and Summit Post forum replies...

Crampons would have made some difference? I am no longer eager, so I stay off Baldy in full conditions, but if I were still getting after it, probably would carry both. Micros for most of the time and crampons when necessary.

I think we also ...

Always enjoyed exploring the terrain and mines above Widman Ranch (mid- 70's). Sometimes I'd prefer taking the longer dirt road up Cow and Cattle Canyon .. 10 miles I recall? Bummer that approach is off limits....

Re: Monrovia Canyon Park to Spring Camp by bike

that's a good ride. i did it about 6 weeks ago. took me prolly 3 hrs ride time to get to Spring Camp, tho I had no interest in it.. nothing particularly special about it, tho that entire back side of Monrovia Peak is very nice .. but I did take a turn and go down the seemingly abandoned Upper San ...

Bummer about the smoke. That takes some of the fun outta it..

And in terms of perspective- it's all about the long run. Take care of life. If the climbs are meant to be, they will happen.

Be nice if I could do that route in a day, but at slow and old 58.. well.... I was happy just to backpack and ...

The north facing walls got a fair amount of rock-climbnig action in the late 70's.

Taco- have you given the walls a serious assessment? Is there some quality up there?

Great trip report thnx.

I'm always on the fence with snowshoes. Used to prefer skiis for everything, but now me older, less skilled. Snowshoes likely safer.

No way anybody is goin LSMC to BSMC. But cool video.

I tried to find Lookout Point a few times in the 70's and basically did what those guys did. Must have been a trail that started downstream a tad ... that the key. But it's a bushwhack.
