Re: Kagel Canyon rd: access

I've also hiked along Kagel Truck Trail from access points including the Dillon Divide and Lopez Canyon Park and I think I even recall seeing a vehicle (might have been a white truck - I don't quite recall) parked on the side of the road outside of those red/black AP gates. I don't remember seeing a...

Re: Funny trees

This tree got a little confused about which way is up at some point (Clear Creek - San Gabriels).

Re: Willett Hot Springs

Thanks for the report! I've never been out to this one; looks cool. A question about the cabins: they're decently-enough maintained to have a watertight roof and animal-proof doors and all that? Any idea who does that? I think that there are about 5 cabins in the campsite just east of the hot sprin...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains

Cool...I mean whoever explores I have a respect for...cause so much of today is top 5 social media. Only a few spots I dont tolerate for dislike...but thats it. You have to like these places, even though I dont disclose where they are :-) Oh...theres also the self-appointed exploration reserve defi...

Willett Hot Springs

I started at Piedra Blanca Trailhead early in the morning (2/24/2024) and made my way along the Sespe River Trail. While I was planning on making my way out to the Sespe Hot Springs, I decided just to spend the morning at Willett due to how high the river was. IMG_8891.jpeg While I saw fewer human f...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs

OSM is the dataset used by everyone who isn't google or apple. It is publically sourced, and doesn't suck everywhere you can't sell advertising. I added some of these routes, but didn't have complete info, so the mapped route is just a straight line in places (as you say). This is noted in the data...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs

The waterfall is near the bottom of Forbush trails which I took when returning toward Camino Cielo from Little Caliente Excellent. Thanks not including the rerouting of the trail to avoid most the Mono Jungle (not in Google Maps yet - likely doesn't add much) The routes should all be in openstreetm...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs

Thanks for the report. Caliente Hot Springs is twice as hot as a regular hot springs. The small pool is defiantly hot. I was refilling my bottle from the creek every 10-15 minutes or so. The larger pool is nice, and a little more comfortable, but I wanted to give the campers some space. The first t...

Re: Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs

Thanks for the report! I've now been on much of that, and it's good to see that it's all still there, and passable and all that. Where's the waterfall in your photo? Was this a day trip for you? Mileage? Gain? The waterfall is near the bottom of Forbush trails which I took when returning toward Cam...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains

Good explore! Kind of an all-around deal...Im still branded to certain spots for better or for worse. So what do you plan on? The same access? I like to mix things up between where going places I've already been and exploring new spots. I generally try to keep the driving one way under an hour, but...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains

FYI - Part of the route to Rankin is still closed. It might re-open in June. This is what the forest service shows. https://www.fs.usda.gov/Internet/FSE_DOCUMENTS/fseprd1111500.pdf It looked like the route I took went around the closure or at the edges but looking at it again, I might have been off...

Big Caliente and Little Caliente Hot Springs

I all! I introduced myself in the part of this forum that covers the San Gabriel Mountains, but I recently went on a nice excursion to Big and Little Caliente Hot Springs that I thought I'd share with y'all. Last Saturday I was in the Santa Barbara area and I decided to try out Big Caliente hot spri...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains

Cool photos....so is Lower Clamshell fire road officially open to hiking post-Bobcat fire? I went from the Monrovia Hillside Preserve along the fire breaks that start at Sunset Bench up to the Peak. All of this seems open from the National Forest website (The closures appears to be north of Monrovi...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains

Thanks for posting! I'd love to see more info about the mines and the Bear Canyon narrows. How far above the trail junction (from Smith Mountain saddle) are the narrows? If you write more detailed reports, nobody would complain :) I accessed to Bear Creek Narrows from the West Fork area taking the ...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains

Hi Carl, Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your trips! I don't recall hearing about the Denver Indicator Mine. Is it pretty interesting? How big is it? I look forward to reading about your other trips. It's not very big, but pretty easy to spot from the infrastructure compared to the othe...

Re: Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains

Great pics, thanks! Question re: Pacoima Cyn...did you happen to see any sign of the Dagger Flat Trail when passing? It was under re-construction from the top a few years back, but hat only been brushed and graded for 1km, then nothing. I did a trip to see if I could continue cutting, but realized ...

Introduction and some spots in the San Gabriel Mountains

Hi, My name is Carl and I'm a little new to this forum and I really enjoy all of the posts and trip reports on this website. I explore the San Gabriel's a bunch and thought I'd quickly share pictures from some of my recent trips. This is my first time posting here so I hope it all loads correctly. I...
