Re: Figure 8 loop via Jones Peak SE Ridge
Nicely done. Good luck exploring that ridge that connects to Hastings Peak - looks like pure bushwhackery to me, plus both Bailey and Hastings Canyon are technical and are not good bail out options. Well the lower portion has some clear use trails that go away, so I would just plan on going up as f...

Glad to hear your getting back on the trail. Just gradually ease back in, don't hit on the steep stuff immediately!

Re: TR: Rabbit Peak from S-22/Villager Peak, 24-May-2008
Tim, what time did you start this hike?
Also, you mentioned 8000 ft gain in 11 miles (one way), but I think its a bit less than that. Round trip total elevation gain is about 8000 ft, right? And there's a bit over 1000 on the way back I think.

Re: General Conditions
I know some people hiked up the Santa Anita ridge from Chantry to Mt Wilson last Saturday:

Re: Brown Mountain & Bear Canyon Loop Dec 20, 2008
How would you compare the west ridge of Brown to the ascent of Rattlesnake? Steeper. A little more brush. Not as long. Nice TR. Looks like some good hiking. I like the route you chose, forming a loop from Oakwilde. In terms of going N or S from Tom Sloane Saddle, I think you picked the better route...

Re: Bighorn sheep - a quest for a photo
Those are incredible photos. I've always wanted to see one, but frankly have probably never situated myself to do so. I probably hike with too many people and probably don't get started early off so they are probably scared off by then. One of these days... I'm glad you got to see one, and at least ...

Re: Brown Mountain & Bear Canyon Loop Dec 20, 2008
Great report! That's cool that you got into Bear canyon. It looks gorgeous in there. Any more pics of the tracks you found?? That shortcut trail down to Oakwilde is pretty handy, huh? Yes it's pretty convenient. I think I'll use it to check out royal gorge and do a loop at some point. Sorry I only ...

Ah yes I forgot about those air quality cams! I linked to them last year but totally forgot.
So looks like down to about 4500 ft. Thanks guys.

Re: Ken Burton Trail
well I'm still debating this. I haven't been on the trails on these routes so don't know how much danger there would be with snow, but then I think the snow level might not be much until ascending Lowe. I'm split on doing t his versus some hike I mapped on on the backbone trail in Santa Monica mtns...

Re: GPS Discussion #2 Elevation Gain
Yup I think I get about the same tightness in fit on my curves using about 10 points on a side. Totally get the error thing, I've done at least a little bit of filtering to see the change in frequency content. Basically flat or linear has very low frequency content, so you can get away with a very l...

Re: GPS Discussion #2 Elevation Gain
Comparing your measurements to someone else without knowing how the measurement was taken is impossible It's like having an apple and an orange and saying they are not the same, well yeah Well my final point kind of touches on this, you need to know what the person used to determine their elevation...

GPS Discussion #2 Elevation Gain
I wrote up a simple little analysis on how smoothing data affects calculation of total elevation gain. Those of you that use GPS devices, I was wondering how much you've tracked what the device reads compared to what hiking literature and/or topo calculated estimates for a hike? I find mind tends to...

Re: Ken Burton Trail
Okay I'm gonna be checking out a bunch of this Saturday. Gonna start of the ACH and take down the Twin Canyon use trail to Oakwilde, pick up the Ken Burton trail, then ascend the west ridge to Brown Mountain. After, will likely continue east all the way to Mt. Lowe. Then, turn around the same way we...

Re: Pasadena Marathon: 2008-11-16
Yeah, I was predicting about the same for me, probably would have ended up a few minutes faster on the half than the baldy run. It's funny how people perceive difficulty - when you tell someone you are doing the Baldy run they think you are crazy but not a half-marathon, even though they basically r...
