Here is another one for the Eis Piraten ANF closure-order series.
The start to the year has been a little rough, with the terrible fires burning things I really don't want burned on top of the industry I work in in a slump we are all worried is a new normal. I needed to get out and thrash around in ...

Re: Super Safe Hiking in Very Dangerous Conditions
I was hiking the Verdugos a lot 5-10 years ago. They were interesting enough to me at that point, but once I started digging into the San Gabriels starting in 2020 the Verdugos started to feel pretty basic pretty quickly in comparison. But they still function as a convenient beginner-Gabes, with ...

But WHY DIDNT YOU TAKE THE SKULL HOME AND CLEAN IT is the problem here :?
I'm not really a bone guy. Not a lot of interest in cleaning it, and nowhere to keep it once I did. May as well leave it to be found by someone who is a bone person. Or let the skull return to the earth as the creator ...

My son used to go hiking with me until he was about 12, then devices took over. I wish you better luck :)
Yeah, I know the same fate could very well be in store for Forest as well, so I'm getting in the adventures while I still can! Doing a hike with a friend of his could be a helpful strategy ...

Ok, so I'll confess I haven't kept up with the T.K. Trek TRs. But rest assured, Forest has been exploring. Here is a roundup of some of what we've been up to since October:

Re: Entire ANF temporarily closed
Contained doesn't mean out or zero risk. There will be a lot of cleanup before the masses should be tramping around out there, and I'm sure many will ignore closure orders too.
The Eaton Fire burn zone and area around it, sure there should be a closure order, just like the FS does for any ...

Re: Entire ANF temporarily closed
You know, when things are lousy I go to the mountains to feel better. The ANF is the best self care resource I have. I know I'm not the only person in LA who feels that way. And I know I'm not the only person in LA who could use some self care right now.

Re: Magic Mountain from the North
Thanks! I've had one bad experience where I wanted to make a loop through Oat Mountain and got stopped four miles away from the car, and instead had to turn around and backtrack eight miles. I've encountered some aggressive signage and fences around Newhall and Santa Clarita, and given the ...

Your thought process is sound!
Haven't done these routes yet. But my experience has been this area is relatively forgiving brush-wise, and these routes have what look to be decent roads upon cursory examination of satellite imagery. At least on foot you should be fine. On bike you probably are too ...

Cool, remote area!
Your elevations maybe don't match up with the USGS scan on Caltopo(?) but I see the area you were in based on other place names you mention.

That day in September after we all did Rabbit, myself, Dima and Jeko were at a tunnel entrance (forget the more technical term) after coming down Roundtop, on that ridge between Iron #3. A Christmas Eve tradition, 2024 edition - Wheeler canyon east rim
My father and I have a tradition, dating back to Cowen Hill in Maine from the year 2000 when I was 14, of doing a short and sweet hike on Christmas Eve. We've been able to get one in most years since.
With my parents in Ogden, Utah over Christmas, the family made the 10 hour drive to visit and we ...

Gain calculations are a dark and speculative art, no matter the method used.dima wrote: Fri Dec 27, 2024 11:22 am Great question. The net gain is more like 4500ft, but there's a LOT of up/down. The "true" number is mostly unknowable. Strava thinks it's 8k, and maybe that's correct. Who knows.

Nice bag!
Cobblestone Mountain is prominent from countless hikes I've been on around the Santa Clarita valley. Didn't realize it was such a challenge to summit. And yes, the geology of most of the mountain is completely different from the San Gabriels, being Eocene marine sedimentary rocks.

That is a seriously remote location! You were as close to Phoenix as you were LA. Getting lost would be spooky.
That area is poorly mapped geologically but your interpretation of a volcanic tuff conglomerate is believable.

Well, we could go up Earl, tag Pickens, then follow the Lukens Fire Road southeast past Hawks (and grab that along the way) to the Teepee, and then down whatever that trail is called (the TeePee Trail) to the end of Harter Lane. Or we could reverse that and go the other direction. Leave a car at ...
