Something hovering between a slope and a cliff that is rapidly disintegrating is a Gabes speciality. Narrow canyons can be such a gamble since ...

The challenge with Los Padres targets seems to be more in the approach to the climbs then the climbs themselves. Not that I've been there.... YET!

Your dedication to this target is amazing! Cool ongoing pet project to have. I've never hiked in the Santa Anas but that Chaparral looks brutal. Some of the dead stuff is a pain to lopper cut, too. If I lived in the OC I would have joined you in the project!

Burma had a big slide dating from the 22-23 winter. They must be serious about maintaining that if its been repaired by bulldozer. Maybe because of the power line access?

Pick 3 (or less) of your favorite adventures you've had in the backcountry. Here are the criteria:
1) They took place in Southern California. Desert, etc is fine but I want to keep it somewhat local.
2) There is a trip report for it on the Eis Piraten site, or an external site, and you need to link ...

I was bummed to find the tailgate on my truck missing when we got back. I have to hand it to the skilled thieves that were able to remove it at a busy County Park in broad daylight. I recommend the route my father and I did in August of 2021. It was a lovely loop, the only problem being it was August and way too hot by the time we finished.

For my 38th Birthday last year, I lead a group expedition deep into the eastern Santa Susanna Mtns in a quest to bag the iconic staple of the San Fernando Valley skyline, Oat Mtn, starting from the Santa Clarita valley, a feat which has never before been achieved, at least by anyone who wrote about ...

The pink boulders looked and felt like normal granite, just pink.
I'll bring the drone. I've been hiking with a giant pack (50L) lately. It's usually overkill, but nice to have all the space.
Maybe just thick concentrations of potassium feldspar in the granitic rock!
Thats great you'll bring ...

Another epic peak bag. The pink rock is such a deep, rosy pink/red. I could take a guess as to its composition from pictures but it would be a shot in the dark.
Drone footage is always so epic. If you want, bring that bad boy on Sunday! Could be a some cool group shots!

Sounds like you were trading road-walking (speed) for bump-navigating (distance).
The ridge-lines and all the bumps, despite the gain from all the ups and downs, were generally decent for x-country. And the bumps allow for short-term goals that keep up morale. Its once I got onto the slopes ...

On paper you could argue its to investigate this old road in Iron Canyon thats on OSM: https://eispiraten.com/viewtopic.php?p=69727&hilit=Sand+Canyon#p69727 , but its not really much of a historic landmark. With Eaton Saddle ahead, I finally felt safe. As I reached the Saddle, I saw there was no Sherriff vehicles, so I started down the road to Red Box. Soon, a USFS truck with fire workers drove by. I filled them in and asked for a ride. I was on my way.

Re: Super Safe Hiking in Very Dangerous Conditions
I was hiking the Verdugos a lot 5-10 years ago. They were interesting enough to me at that point, but once I started digging into the San Gabriels starting in 2020 the Verdugos started to feel pretty basic pretty quickly in comparison. But they still function as a convenient beginner-Gabes, with ...
