Re: Hawks Peak from Falls Ridge
Well, we could go up Earl, tag Pickens, then follow the Lukens Fire Road southeast past Hawks (and grab that along the way) to the Teepee, and then down whatever that trail is called (the TeePee Trail) to the end of Harter Lane. Or we could reverse that and go the other direction. Leave a car at ea...

Re: Hawks Peak from Falls Ridge
I haven't been to Pickens yet. You still interested in that? Anyone else? Also, anyone know whether the Earl Canyon Fire Road is a viable route to Pickens? Parking/access issues? I went about halfway up Earl Canyon Fire Road in February of 2023 with a group of friends, no problems parking, perfectl...

Super cool! Yeah, wish I could have joined, would have definitely appreciated the geology. According to my geologic maps, they dug their shaft into the moon-rock anorthosite, but pretty close to its contact with Mendenhall Gneiss and Mt Lowe Granitic intrusion, so knowing the Gabes and knowing 200 m...

Re: Any one seen this movie?
Justina and I *tried* watching it last night. I think in the right context it would be a lot of fun, but we couldn't get through more than 30 minutes. I recommend alcohol or the green stuff before watching! Its a fun concept, well-executed. Basically a live action version of Wiley Coyote and the roa...

Re: Reflections on the Strawberry Peak west ridge by an Ice Pirate
The great thing about the West ridge of Strawberry is that it's easy enough for anyone to do it. Different people will have a different sense of how death-defying the thing is, but it's all doable. Glad yall finally got out there! Totally - its accessible, offers enough exposure to be a thrill whil...

A is mm 22.45 where I started in a failed attempt. B is mm 22.95. C is where I think you are proposing to start from. Thank you so much for all the historical digging, HikeUp! A 22.45 is the recommended route on the HPS TR I found dating from 1998, but it sounds like you had a brushy experience in ...

Re: Josephine west ridge recon
This is a standard off-trail, HPS Sierra Club Josephine route. They have write-ups on their site with specific directions, how to do this one. Thanks... All I can find is this TR, dating from 1998. https://hundredpeaks.org/archives/hps01360.htm They did it starting from 22.45 (A) which is where Hik...

Reflections on the Strawberry Peak west ridge
On Sunday JeffH myself and Sean did a very enjoyable lollipop loop of Strawberry Peak starting from the road to Colby Camp on the Tujunga side. Great hike. I'm taking a little different approach to the TR this time. Let me preface this by saying, I'm the sort of hiker who is attracted to going off t...

Has anyone done this or similar, starting from the Angeles forest highway? Screen Shot 2024-11-04 at 10.02.52 PM.png I was admiring this craggy eye-catcher driving up Tujunga on my way to Strawberry on Sunday. The more I research it, the more intrigued I become. Re: Strawberry Peak Routes
Yes, the trail up from Colby Camp road ("Strawberry Colby") on the north Tujunga Creek side is perfectly nice. The area got hammered really hard by the station fire so its mostly all whitethorn brush and dead douglas firs except for one drainage that got sparred. The parking lot is huge an...

The Santa Clara divide sets 'em up, and I knock 'em down. Tuesday morning I knocked off a couple peaks along the Santa Clara divide road along its lonely path to Magic Mountain. Met some friendly deer hunters at the trailhead. No luck for them this morning, they were going to try again the next day....

Clearly you were on point 3650: [latlon=34.36023,-118.36489]. I tell my fancy software to do this: ./standalone --image /tmp/out.svg --width 2000 --radius 1500 --zfar 150000 --znear 1000 34.36023 -118.36489 $((110-30)) $((110+30)) and I get the attached. CORRECT! If I'm following correctly, your so...

The Pine Valley mountains tower above St George every time I drive through there. Definitely plan to camp up there one of these times I drive to the grandparent's house during the summer. They are perhaps the largest laccolith in the world! Epic!

I was just gonna say that he's on Santa Clara Divide looking across Pacoima Canyon, but Mendenhall is the flat top near the middle. I believe the fire road junction is near Highline Saddle. So that would make the closer, rounded summit The Pinnacle. If I'm correct, then way in the distance, over th...

Where was I earlier today and can you name all visible peaks?
There is one familiar peak with an unfamiliar silhouette from this vantage point which threw me a little bit, but I still got 'em all.

I didn't see it when I actually took the photo, either! Only when reviewing at home when writing the trip report did I realize it was in the photo. I took the photo only with the intention of illustrating all the loose silt.

Considering the prognosis you had in 2021 it makes you all the more badass that you've explored the mountains as much as you have since then, and were crushing Rabbit Mtn right alongside the best of us just last month! Fight on my friend and I'll see you out there again soon!

Los Pinetos from the San Fernando Valley
Well, if my searching of the board archives is correct, this route does not have a trip report here yet. A blessed onshore flow allowed for some early season adventures in my hiking radius last week. A hike I've had on my to-do list for a long time is the venerable Los Pinetos from the south, baggin...
