The San Gabriel Mountains geographical centroid

Proposed Expedition: The San Gabriel Mountains geographical centroid. A little more than 3 weeks ago, minds delirious and euphoric after indulging in wildly grotesque and delicious variations of JeffH’s smorgasborg of trail-grilled-cheese magnificence, I forget who asked the question, may have been ...

The bears have lighter-colored, almost brown fur. Not really black. Is that common for black bears in the San Gabes?

I see you found treepeople ridge quite different....thanks to them and their saplings planted <1 inch apart, you get a wonderful world of fakery. Oh, did Tree People actually plant those young conifers along the higher portions of the Neight Thousand ridge? Or are you just making a joke? I've actua...

High on 'Neight Thousand'

I navigated 2.5 hours of brutal traffic from Culver City to join Sean and Cecelia at their campsite in Crystal Lake, in the process traveling deeper and higher into the thrashed and tortured granites of the San Gabriel Mt range than I ever had before, driving my little SUV into a remote bowl encircl...

That is excellent! It took me years to get up to Wilson and Baldy since I was working on finishing everything else closer. I wasn't quite as thorough with the mapping as you, but the rationale was similar I think. Haven't been up to Whitney yet, and I'm not almost there :) Oh cool, so you have a si...

Good work Anthony! Sounds like those falls put up a pretty decent fight for you. That is a serious neighborhood for exploration... I don't think you can get much deeper into the San Gabes then that. Yucca can leave painful red swelling, particularly for some people, but by the looks of your foot it ...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

The huge slide on Lawlor that was repaired recently has re-slid and consumed the road again. It is unclear if the road and debris wall have left the site, or if they are simply buried. To complicate, the lush spring that caused all the trouble is clearly visible as a huge wet spot on the slope abov...

I have been commenting a bit around here, so I suppose I should introduce myself! I’m a music nerd and musician and have been in bands since I was a teen in the ‘90s. Despite growing up not too far away in the SFV, I’d never spent any time in the San Gabriels until I moved to the area five years ag...

Damn, looks like that trail's in the closure zone? It didn't occur to me that the closures were in part due to unstable ground. I always assumed it had to do with not disturbing the vegetation. Yeah, have we determined if Colin was actually within the closure zone when the incident occurred? If not...

The satellite imagery really illustrates how decimated that landscape was by the Bobcat fire. And after a big rainy winter there are plentiful dangers in an area as steep as that. Fire might expose alluring old trails, but beware everyone...

You were in my neck of the woods! Yes, that area is going to be *hot* this time of the year. And not a lot of shade either. Not recommended for a summer hike particularly with the temps we've had recently. I haven't quite bagged Mendenhall myself yet but I hope to do so this winter. I'll probably do...

As Colin stated, he was going to "attempt to find signs of the trail at the upper end where it joins Clamshell Road west of Monrovia Peak." There appears to be an old unmarked trailhead to the west of Monrovia Peak. It also appears to go somewhat SE down the mountain, running parallel and...
