Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)

Damn, looks like that trail's in the closure zone? It didn't occur to me that the closures were in part due to unstable ground. I always assumed it had to do with not disturbing the vegetation. Yeah, have we determined if Colin was actually within the closure zone when the incident occurred? If not...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)

The satellite imagery really illustrates how decimated that landscape was by the Bobcat fire. And after a big rainy winter there are plentiful dangers in an area as steep as that. Fire might expose alluring old trails, but beware everyone...

Re: Mendenhall peak

You were in my neck of the woods! Yes, that area is going to be *hot* this time of the year. And not a lot of shade either. Not recommended for a summer hike particularly with the temps we've had recently. I haven't quite bagged Mendenhall myself yet but I hope to do so this winter. I'll probably do...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)

As Colin stated, he was going to "attempt to find signs of the trail at the upper end where it joins Clamshell Road west of Monrovia Peak." There appears to be an old unmarked trailhead to the west of Monrovia Peak. It also appears to go somewhat SE down the mountain, running parallel and...

Re: West Fork (Red Box to Shortcut and back)

I keep thinking about the last time we hiked with him to Rose Peak and how we ate ice cream afterwards to celebrate. The memories of that day have taken on a new poignancy. I remember standing with Colin on Rose Peak, probably the best view of the Arroyo Secco there is, and in my excited state, poi...

Re: West Fork (Red Box to Shortcut and back)

Thanks for the trip report, Sean. This has been a long, dark week of searching for Colin and I hoped it was therapeutic in some sense to get out there and look where you could, even if its a long shot. The SAR effort has been amazing... 66 people will be out there today, dogs, horseback, helicopters...

Re: Missing forum member (Colin Walker)

Its maybe a long shot but just going on information that is available to us, Colin was writing about those other mystery "dry lakes" throughout the San Gabriels that he knew of. • Devil's Canyon at the toe of the ridge to West Twin • Graveyard Canyon at the start of what eventually leads u...

@tonesfrommars Thank you for reaching out, Ian, you are smart to check here. I personally didn't know of any hikes this past weekend with Colin being involved, but someone may. Cool trip. Any of you been up to Supercloud Hollow after a rain storm? Does it ever become an actual lake? There was no evidence of recently standing water like dried cracked mud or anything like that to suggest there had been standing water this past winter. Just loose, dry soil with a scattered f...

Another great Front-Range brush-cutting investigative historical adventure lead by Sean! • First time summiting Mt Deception. Brownish granitic rock makes up that peak within the sea of the area's white tonalite, creating a light brown gravel and sand which we then skied down a steep lightly-used tr...

Nice mountains. Never been to that part of Utah, but the parts I've seen were loaded with beauty. Cool that you can hike with your dad. Are you a geologist by trade? I like the details about the rock. I took a basic geology course in college, but have forgotten most of it. I am purely an amateur ge...

I grew up in the Wasatch, but spent most of my time hiking the canyons around SLC. Never hiked out of Ogden. I guess I should have. Good stuff. I haven't explored the Wasatch around SLC yet. Photos, videos, and what I see from my car window suggest its pretty awesome too. Maybe just you have to get...

Sardine and "Wheeler" peak in the northern Wasatch

The family has been staying at my parent's new house in Ogden Utah for the last week. (Until last year they had lived in Maine) The hiking around here is awesome. Yesterday I got out with my father/OG hiking partner in crime to tackle bit of springtime peak bagging in the Wasatch. My father is 67 an...

Sweet! Looks like a good time. What happened with that flipped car? It looks new-ish. Somebody went off the road recently, and the car was abandoned? Yeah, there is a 100ft+ very steep bank/cliff between that car and the road, so it took quite the tumble and fall to get down there. The registration...

I've only encountered talus in the Wasatch, and was going down at the time. Which was fun but also felt like I was in the process of triggering a rockslide. "Plunge of Peril" - bagging Pacoima reservoir

This trip report is named in honor of the 1937 Zorro episode of the same name, which was filmed at the Pacoima dam and the title also felt relevant to a couple experiences we had.
