Re: Bridge Fire
The fire has crept onto South Hawkins, which seems a little alarming. The latest report indicates hopefully it has stopped?? : On the west flank, in the Sheep Mountain Wilderness's rugged and steep terrain, firefighting efforts successfully held the fire from advancing near Rattlesnake Peak by const...

Re: Peak 5881 OSM oddity
Do you think we would find birthday balloons if we went over there? Thanks yall, you're way too nice. If there is one thing you can depend on the Gabes for, its birthday balloons ;) Next time my birthday surprise for you is going to be a party decorated with every birthday balloon everyone on the b...

Peak 5881 OSM oddity
Morning, There is a bump in the far northern Gabes, kind of an obscure location northwest of Pacifico Mtn and south of Mt Emma. The coordinates are 34.41351, -118.0581 The USGS has a benchmark of 5881, but then OSM gives different info, and the change-set history has me confused. Including that the ...

Re: Bridge Fire
Good thing the fire had burned for a day southward from the East Fork before the explosion north we saw yesterday. If the explosion north had happened initially, hikers at Bridge to Nowhere, Iron Mtn, etc would have been in serious trouble. Maybe the Fork Fire burn scar is partially responsible for ...

Re: Bridge Fire
The burn scar from the Fork Fire earlier this summer seems to have blocked some of the northward spread towards Iron.
Its a little tricky to tell, but I think according to the watch duty map Dima shared I think they have been able to hold the line along Glendora Ridge Road on the south...?

It is the ACH. I think the painted lines just aren't visible, or maybe they weren't there in the 80s?
Its in the section past Red Box that has been closed.
Its where Markham looks like it has crazy exposure poking up behind San Gabriel.

Always love your TRs, Taco. An epic day to the moonscape and back. The White Mountains appeal to me because everyone goes to the Sierra. And I know what you mean about a view full of memories. I rubber-neck glance at the Gabes' silhouette every morning driving to work- its very safe.

Re: creeks with minnow fishing pools?
Probably wrong time of year. You might try Aliso (Zelzah) or Limekiln (Tampa). Those are 'park' and have good trail networks, cross the creeks a few times, always have frogs singing in the eve. West end of Vanowen, the 'south fork' of Bell Canyon, might have some. There are huge water tanks on the ...

creeks with minnow fishing pools?
Howdy folks, My son Forest's latest obsession is exploring pools for little minnows, crawfish and other interesting critters. I am VERY in support of this hobby! Its proven to be a lot of fun. Our go-to destination has been Tujunga Creek, and we've just about explored all of its possible pools below...

Re: Mental endurance in hiking
No question having a partner or a team creates synergy. If one person doesn't see a way forward, maybe another one does. Or, like when we Black Jack Peak and several people took turn on point cutting brush. Too big a job for a single person, but doable with a group. Strength in numbers. Group dynam...

Re: Mental endurance in hiking
Re: Oat Mtn I think we hit our risk tolerance. At least I did. The knife edge was too steep with potentially lethal falls, and the existing rope was very brittle, unsafe. With a new rope, proper setup and harness, one of us would have led the downclimb, I'm sure, even if it meant splitting up. Yeah...

The second picture is one of the pull outs above Switzer and the first is probably up near Red Box. You know, yes maybe we are positioned right about Red Box, looking west down the Arroyo Seco past the side of Mt Deception, and that rounded peak in the foreground could very well be "Panorama P...

I cheated it was filmed in the San Gabriels. If you want more hints, here is a behind the scenes video showing the filming in more detail. It is a very obvious and popular place. Cool, that featurette gives lots more hints, including some kind of canyon trailhead/day use area or visitors center the...

Re: Where are they? Film & TV edition
I don't recognize it as the Gabes. Reminds me a little of Canada. But without cheating, I don't know if the show is filmed in Canada or America. Why do you say it can't be Pennsylvania? Also, a lot of filming is done in Georgia. I *do* know the show is filmed in Los Angeles. Those mountains in my s...

Where are they? Film & TV edition
During these deep summer weeks where the temps are in the triple digits and the mountains are generally pretty uninhabitable to humans around here, we all need ways to keep distracted until things cool off. (I spent hours tracing routes for about 20 upcoming 12-mile radius hikes...) Last night I was...

Re: Iron Canyon - trail on OSM?
Although poorly updated, I find the FS maps useful for place names and historical info, with the poor updates actually making them more valuable in that regard. And they are visually cleaner than USGS topos. The more exploring and research I do the more different resources I draw upon depending on w...

Yeah its the same idea as the CalTopo shaded relief, or Google Maps Terrain shading, but this does seem a little high resolution. Nice find! Maybe useful for old mine stuff?
