Re: Biking down Highway 39
ooh nice job! that seems like a great idea... so at what point is the road closed off to cars? how many cars passed you on the way up/down? :P Highway 39 is closed off to cars about 2 miles past West fork road at 2000 feet elevation. Crystal Lake is about 11 miles past the closure and at 5600 feet....

Deer in Monrovia
For the last few weeks my gf and I have been going up to Monrovia canyon to ride our bikes. I talked to the ranger there and he said they see alot of bears up there and the best time to see them is usually midweek at night, so thats when we go. Well so far we havent seen a bear up there but we have ...

I finally biked highway 39, up insted of down. :D My gf and I rode from the lower gate up to Crystal Lake on Sunday. It was extremely hot the whole time and there is virtually no shade, we started at 10:30 in the morning. It took us about 4 hours to get to the lake. On the way up we ran out of water...

Nice essay. 8) I have always enjoyed your trip reports about climbing in the mountians. I agree with you that the mountians are a badass place even if the San Gabriels have crappy rock. I always thought it was cool that you find intersting routes that most others wouldnt take especially in Icehouse ...

Past Cabin Flat along Parire Fork somewhere, would be a good spot. It doesn't look like many people go down there, and when I was there I saw animal tracks. Theres excellent waterflow in the creek, it's really bushy and looks like the kind of place bears and mountian lions live.........

Re: Camping Trip, Buckhorn & Cabin Flat
Sounds like a nice trip! Btw, in Photo 33 in your album, it looks like there's a picnic table in the middle of a creek??! What was that all about? Im not sure how that table got there, what I was thinking is the table may have been washed away from the campground during runoff from melting snow int...

Vincent Gap to Praire Fork/Mine Gulch/E Fork SG River is in OK shape. The trail is gone the last mile or so as you approach the confluence, but you just walk down the open creekbed; no biggie. Thanks for the trail info...... I have been eyeing that area for a while now, but my gf is scared to go do...

Camping Trip, Buckhorn & Cabin Flat
My gf and I went camping Tuesday 5/26 through Thursday 5/28 in the San Gabriels. 8) The 1st day we drove around, first we went to the summit of Mount Pacifico. There we ate our lunch and spent a while climbing on all the large rock piles. Some of them are pretty large and difficult to get up. My gf ...

Eaton Canyon Trails
Today I went for a quick hike up Eaton Canyon to the main waterfall. My mission while hiking up to the first falls was to find the route (for a future trip) up the side of the canyon that takes you to the 2nd falls that has a deep pool and a natural "waterslide". I think I found it, it's o...

anf employees are fail. maybe it's because they are understaffed, underpaid, underfunded, whatever, but I've gotten so many incorrect statements from them, it drives me crazy. I agree 100% with this statement. They never know anything, they don't know when roads or campgrounds are going to reopen. ...

Does anyone happen to know when the Angeles Crest Highway is going to reopen between Islip Saddle and Vincent Gap. I heard from a ranger at the Grassy Hollow Visitor Center that opening day should be this month. Then I asked another ranger on Friday and he said end of summer.

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
I went up the ski hut trail last week 4/8 and it was almost 100% snowfree to the hut, after that the snow varies between snow free in the areas with lots of sun exposure and lots of snow in the more shaded areas. The final ridge to the top of the mountian was still nearly completely covered with har...

Went to Mount Baldy yesterday 4/8 via the ski hut trail. :D When I arrived there were clear skies and about a half inch to 1 inch of new snow on the ground.
