Who Was Thomas W. Sloan?
Hi all, just curious if anyone knows any interesting facts about Tom Sloan, aka Thomas W. Sloan. The only thing I could find follows: A reference on an old government hiring document on Google Books: Screenshot_20200622_112054.png That the Tom Sloan trail was built in 1923: Screenshot_20200622_11132...

Re: Altadena Crest Trail's Skylane Gap
I tried to hike the Skylane Gap and it felt weird following the easement, as it goes right next to the kindergarten. I ended up climbing up to the Star of Palawoo instead which is on this big ridge that connects up to the Mt. Lowe road. I bushwacked down to the debris basin dam area off the east sid...

Re: Altadena Crest Trail's Skylane Gap
@hikeup thanks. I hiked from Eaton up to Rubio last weekend. At 34.199434, -118.119095 there is a little scramble shortcut on AFC land ( https://arroyosfoothills.org/land/rubio ... n-project/ , where they mention installing a bridge) which puts you on the trail that hits the Gooseberry Motorway whic...

Altadena Crest Trail's Skylane Gap
I was hiking the Altadena Crest Trail and started at the Cobb Estate going west. It seems to end at an urban farm with a bunch of cute baby goats on Skylane Drive, which I hiked down to get out. There is a western segment that goes from Loma Alta park until Chaney Trail, but the two halves don't con...

Re: New toilet at the old Tavern site
@JeffH each pump of the foot pedal (think the chairs at a barber shop) advances the conveyor belt of poop about 3 inches. after 5 pumps you've scrubbed it all off for the next person. I'll be honest I didn't really look too hard inside to see how it works. But there is handy sign next to the toilet...

Re: New toilet at the old Tavern site
I hiked up from Altadena to use the fancy new centerpiece toilet. For anyone interested, the toilet is clean, has no odor, has 1.5 rolls of TP and is not locked as of a few days ago. I remain fascinated by the mechanism by which you 'flush' the thing, which involves depressing a lever with your foot...

Re: ANF boundary question
Thanks @willie92708. I also got some more information by emailing the ANF, they told me the black line is the 'congressional boundary' and the green line is the 'administrative boundary'. Not sure if there are any legal differences there though...

ANF boundary question
I noticed that in the recent map distributed with the trail closures it has a National Forest Boundary marked in green: closures.png But on the 'FSTopo' map here https://data.fs.usda.gov/geodata/raster ... states.php , if you go to the region around the Cobb Estate for example it shows the same gree...

Re: History question: Neil Armstrong's cabin in the SGs
good luck, if you "search Google for this image" there are some more shots. It's close to the foothills. Also on some First Man trivia site I saw a reference to how some old guy claimed to live in Armstrong's old cabin and let the movie crew take reference shots inside

Re: History question: Neil Armstrong's cabin in the SGs
I found a picture of the cabin... that hill in the background looks kinda like the one at 34.448693, -117.915736 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5b89d7603e2d0969b9abb609/1540248059941-18HXY69UPPO03DAYUO9C/ke17ZwdGBToddI8pDm48kLkXF2pIyv_F2eUT9F60jBl7gQa3H78H3Y0txjaiv_0fDoOvxcdMmMKkDsyUq...
