Re: East Mermaid via SE Ridge

That was sweet
I didn't like descending that chute since it's super steep and loose; but doing the loop added some great variety, and the water levels right now are low enough to stay dry if you're good at hopping around. I would not recommend down climbing the rocky sections in the chute; the rock ...

Re: Favorite spots in Los Padres

Sespe hot springs is great; I think I posted on the ascent up the mountain just north of it from the springs. Was a fun weekend.

I've been wanting to go down sespe canyon/narrows; I forgot the exact name, but sounds like a fun multiday trip that requires some dry bags

Indianhead via jordan hot springs via blackrock TH

I'm surprised no one has posted on this, including me, since I've been up there many a time now. Indianhead is a cool little formation of rock that looks red from a distance, visible from jordan hot springs, but up close from western aspect it's irridescent green with lichen. It has some class 2/3 ...

Dima, it was even bigger than her head... However while the flavor was great, it was a bit dry, probably in part because we cooked it over a camp fire on a cast iron. Might have been an old specimen too

High elevation gain training hikes, wants recs

Hi all, I'm loosely planning to do the WURL next year and so thinking about hikes I could train on with a lot of elevation gain. I live in Venice and so access/drive time is a big consideration. I used to do old baldy trail but I understand it's now closed with the fire, so that's put. Options that ...

Double feature: tahquitz and cornell peak

What a weekend: took Dima out to Idyllwild for his first trad or multipitch climb and he absolutely crushed it; made short work of white maiden's (5.8 var, 800'), then since we finished relatively early, went for extra credit up El camino real (10-, 500'). We couldn't resist doing the classic ...

On the positive side, the fire might have opened up paths that were previously too brushy. I wonder how many of the bigger trees survived.

Seeking trad multipitch climbing partner

Aloha, anyone here climb technical rock? I like hiking and all that, but really dig the high alpine stuff and long multi pitches. I can lead trad 10s and follow harder. I live in Venice and often climb at cliffs of id and can easily take fri-sun for trips. Would love to get up on more high sierra ...

Nice finds y'all!

Here are some boletes we found on the hike/climb up to meriam peak a couple weeks ago. They were tasty. I didn't speciate them but not necessary for eating. Not pictured were the hoards of mosquitoes attacking us.

Good trout fishing up there too!

Re: Some crag in the middle of nowhere on the side of Hawkins ridge

Sounds like a fun time; wish I coulda made it!

Much of the local climbing I've found in the San Gabes is super chossy and so not inspiring of confidence. I much prefer solid rock where I won't die from it fracturing off from my weight, but can still die other ways. Anyway, I hear you about the ...

Got any info on the route(s)? How long, what grade, 1 pitch, all gear? Looks like a fun time, but hard to beat the established high Sierra spots like the needles, Yosemite, tuolomne, etc.

Attempt on ridge traverse to thorn point, via piedra Blanca trailhead

I've been eyeing this hike to thorn point along the ridge for a few years and last time tried it on a whim while in the area, wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and without a saw. So when last weekend's passage ride was cancelled, Rich and I made plans to instead try this bad boy out, and this time, to come ...
