Re: Bridge Fire closures

After the closures are lifted, how much of the area would be covered by poodle dog bush? Would that make it impassible or could you get by with long pants and sleeves? Wondering since I don't have much experience with that plant.

Re: Bridge Fire

Good thing the fire had burned for a day southward from the East Fork before the explosion north we saw yesterday. If the explosion north had happened initially, hikers at Bridge to Nowhere, Iron Mtn, etc would have been in serious trouble. Maybe the Fork Fire burn scar is partially responsible for...

Re: Bridge Fire

Lookout Mountain. Sunset Peak. The East Fork Narrows. Lupine. Pine Mountain. Iron Mountain. Bighorn Mine (it'll be a miracle if Tom Vincent's cabin survives). Even all the western slopes of Baldy and maybe soon to be more. All my favorite spots in the San Gabriels up in flames. I've looked at the fi...

Re: Lookout Mountain via Cattle Canyon Viable?

I went up there by that route in 2020. If you sprint you're only on that road for a minute.

I remember the route being a lot better than the other attempts describe. Maybe it had just been cleared recently?

Re: "Ridge to River" - A San Gabriel Mountain Death March

Thanks for the report, and congratulations on completing such a tough hike. What sort of hikes did you do to train for this? I mostly run to train for the hikes I do. It's often hard set aside enough time to train by hiking, so I try to run every day if possible. Earlier this summer, I got to go to...

"Ridge to River" - A San Gabriel Mountain Death March

34 Miles. 11,500' Elevation Gain. 27.5 hours of hiking without stopping to sleep. The most physically challenging adventure I've ever done, and possibly will ever do. The route: East Fork Trailhead - Iron Mountain - Mt. Baldy - Dawson Peak - Pine Mountain - Down Pine Mountain Ridge to Lupine Campgro...

Identifying Locations of 1910s-1920s era photographs

Going through some old family photos, I came across some photos from my great-grandmother's hikes in the late 1910s and early 1920s. I believe they are from either the San Gabriel or San Bernardino mountains based on the look of the terrain and a post card from Big Bear. They're from different times...

Tools for bushwhacking in the Gabes?

I've been hiking and bushwhacking for a few years now in the San Gabriel Mountains. When off trail, most often I just do my best to push through the brush in the direction I want to go. As anyone who's done this knows, this can be really time consuming and difficult in chaparral. Would a machete be ...

Re: Baldy zen resort

I don't like it. The last thing Mt. Baldy needs is a massive development that will bring more traffic and clueless tourists. This isn't going to bring in any more people who respect our mountains (who are always welcome). This caters to those who can't bear to leave behind their cushy lifestyle to e...

Re: Eastern Sierra - Inyo Range - Unlisted Mine Question?

Interesting. I know there's a lot of mines out there. The topo map shows 9 horizontal adits and 4 vertical shafts on that hillside above those ruins, but doesn't name them. Looks like there could be some significant tunnels judging from the tailings piles outside the adits. It also looks like there ...

Re: Run to the Top

I've done the Run to the Top twice. It's definitely a fun challenging race. Each time I've arrived there at 7:00 am with decent parking. People are sometimes hesitant at first to park by the side of the road near the start line, but the organizers won't mind if you park there. That's usually the bes...

Re: Triangular peak markers in the San Gabriels

We came from the south at Cow Canyon Saddle. The trail was in decent condition and my dad and I were able to follow it pretty much the entire way, although it is starting to get a bit overgrown. There were a few small patches of snow near the top too. I couldn't see anything from the top though, the...
