Re: San Jacinto via Snow Creek

Thanks for posting! How much knowledge/experience do you have about gauging avy risk? You talked about this a bit, but in retrospect, do you feel like you maybe should have gone at a different time? Would more knowledge/experience have helped?

And to those confused, this is about a trip on April ...

San Jacinto via Snow Creek

Timing Is Everything

Report and pics

Snow Creek isn't a viable route every year. The mountain needs the right amount of snowfall at the right times in the right places with the right temperature systems during our short SoCal winter. Thankfully, January and February made it clear that 2024 ...

Re: Ultralight overnight with a toddler to Cooper Canyon

Also I should point out I created and recently launched Trip Report . It's something that I always wish existed, so I learned how to build it, and then I did (it took a few years...). It's a passion project and something I think people in this community might enjoy. I hope some of you use it to ...

Re: Another seldom visited front range peak

That last mile once you hop off 3N32 is pretty spectacular ridge hiking, some of the best in the San Gabes. Even the game trails basically disappear about 1/2 way across. Couple false summits with really dramatic views of the way ahead and behind. We got lucky with the really moody weather ...

Yep - started from Dillon Divide:

https://caltopo.com/m/3U54B

All of the possible ridges you could take down from the summit end as a 10ft cliff above the fire road/trail below, unfortunately. From the top, however, I did scout out two possible gullies (marked on the map) that you could traverse ...

Another seldom visited front range peak

Can you name it? I've tried to include enough contextual terrain to make it possible but not too easy.

Re: Mount McKinley

Have you considered doing Condor Point from Trail Canyon?

I think it's a lot of gain (~5k), but I've read a couple of trip reports on it.
Last time I tried was in 2018 or 2019 and it was impassable (in my opinion) beyond the remains of Tom Lucas camp. I spent an hour making about 1/4 mile ...

Actually yea I probably will be down for that depending on the day (I have a 10 month old so getting out is tougher than it used to be). I've made it to Condor Peak before but Condor Point is my white whale of the San Gabes.

Mount McKinley

I moved into the foothills of the San Gabes two years ago and McKinley has been taunting me ever since. I've bagged every visible named peak I can see from my house (mostly the Mendenhall Ridge and Little Tujunga areas) but had yet to make my way there.

Three years ago my wife and I backpacked the ...

Guess the peak in the front range

I like to explore the seldom visited front range of the San Gabes and ANF during the more hospitable winter months. This is a very local peak for me and it doesn't see many visitors. There is no summit register. The hike is only 5 miles round trip, and most of it is on a forest service road until ...

One mom and two cubs were together, and then about an hour later a single adult. Mama put herself between us and her cubs, but they didn't move very far off trail.
