Re: ANF Fire Danger Level Raised

I drove by Big Rock Creek Sunday evening and saw two families where they had BBQs strategically placed underneath low hanging trees. I guess shade was more important than burning down the entire forest.

Re: Punchbowl Pallett Williamson South Fork Loop

This trail is wide open from start to finish. I have twice managed through my own lameness to get too close to South Fork CG and briefly lose the trail back to the Devil's Chair segment. The climbers' trails up the west slopes of Pallett and Williamson are indistinct in spots, but hard to lose. If ...

Re: Punchbowl Pallett Williamson South Fork Loop

There is no way he took a shortcut between the Southfork Trail and the Punchbowl trail. There is a long line ridgeline with several mini summits that would need to be summited.

Re: Punchbowl Pallett Williamson South Fork Loop

Elwood, What were your total trip stats? I have good eyes, but can't read your map. Did you see and water in any of the valleys as you approached Burkhart saddle (like Cruther's creek)? If I recall correctly, the trip from the Punchbowl to Burkhart saddle is close to 4000 feet of elevation gain. Gre...

Re: Punchbowl Pallett Williamson South Fork Loop

That photo of the punchbowl is really cool - seeing the big white band of rock like that, and knowing it's the San Andreas Fault! Great bear sighting!! What you are seeing are two transitions. First is the transition between the sandstone "Punchbowl formation" (light colored rock) and the...

Re: Red Rock Mine (fail) but still a great adventure.

Interesting. So that was a 24 mile loop we were attempting -- although I suppose it would have been a bit shorter since you could drive in farther back then. Still a pretty good trek. Another spot I'll have to back into that I haven't been to in a long time. I've got an older copy of Trls of the An...

This only applies to hunting so far. Recreational shooting hasn't been restricted yet.

Are those old trails you mentioned (and still visible via the maps) available in old books?

A good portion of the state is now lead free. A 20 round box of .357 cost me over $30.00 bucks. One box of lead free ammo for my 7mm was $63.00 bucks

Looked like apretty nice excursion. And wow!!! 3 gallons of water. Side question - are you allowed to carry a firearm in the Angeles? As a hunter yes. I have a valid California hunting license, and Coyotes season is all year long  . The only thing I had to do is comply with the new lead ba...

Re: Red Rock Mine (fail) but still a great adventure.

When you said "Pianobox" that rang a bell for me. Years and years ago (maybe when I was in Jr. High -- 70's), my dad, my uncle, and I did a loop out to the Gillette Mine from Cienaga Campground through Pianobox to the Gillette Mine Trail to the mine itself, and then returning via Bear, Ci...

well, great attempt even if you didn't make it. how was the terrain? what would most likely deter you from getting to the mine? steep terrain, bad brush, etc...? The terrain to the base of the mountain is a cake walk, my problem was the load on my back. I'm not used to carrying a 60 pounds plus bac...

Red Rock Mine (fail) but still a great adventure.

I was hoping to visit the old mine mentioned in The Search for Redrock Canyon – a lost Shangri-la. Having never visited the area, and not knowing what the water situation would be, I prepared for the worst case scenario. I carried full survival gear, couples days worth of food, 3 gallons of water, a...

Ski area markers line the ski run looking towards the Stairway to Heaven chairlift at Kicking Horse Mountain resort in Golden, B.C., in February, 2009. 15 miles, 5000 feet of gain, to visit a historical mine.

I'm planning on hiking to the Red rock canyon mine described in this article. The Search for Redrock Canyon –, a lost Shangri-la My plan is to start at 6:00 am at the Templin Hwy gated closure side of Fish Canyon. I'm going to take full survival gear along with about 2 gallons of water. Anyone inter...

did you go back to Vicent Gap or down at Dawson Saddle? I returned to Vincent Gap. My time was 8 hours and 56 minutes. I did stop for four geocaches, stopped to take some pictures, and to mess with my old backpack. I had some fitment issues that caused my Trapezius muscles misery during the hike.

I feel sorry for you if you believe anything the LA times prints. If I recall correctly, they were supporters of Prop 117, back in 1991. Incidences of human / lions encounters are on the rise, an the last thing they want is to adversely sway public opinion about the "majestic kitty cat" :r...

Forest Service Route 4N14 is also known as Alimony Truck Trail. It begins, unmarked at the intersection of Cima Mesa Road and 96th Street East in the lovely town of Juniper Hills, roughly 4.25 miles SSE of Littlerock. It is a dirt road and sloppy in spots. Distance to the gate is around 1.76 miles....
