Re: The Wolf at Trout Creek
wtf is going on here? sure hunting could actually be helpful - in the instances that the animal is overpopulated . but um, not when it's endangered. How do you know that the population of wolves is endangered? Do you believe the garbage stats that the anti-hunters use to claim wolves are still enda...

Re: The Wolf at Trout Creek
Are Hunters Stupid? The Unintended Consequences of Wolf Hunting Sometimes I think most hunters in Montana, Idaho and Wyoming are as clueless as Daryl. They can’t seem to comprehend how killing wolves baffles, if not outright infuriates, a lot of people. Wolf killing gives fodder to those who want t...

Re: Rebuilding the San Gabriels
If all the talk about "El Nino" weather returning this winter is true, then trail building should wait until next year. Once the heavy downpours hit the the barren slopes, erosion is going to hit those mountains like the sun melting an ice cream cone. I suspect the roads are going to exper...

I may offend the delicate sensibilities of some "San Gabriel Mt. fans," but, to me, this forrest looks way more scenic than most of the San Gabriels. ![Smile :)](./images/smilies/icon_e_smile.gif)

Re: The Station Fire Thread
There needs to be an investigation as to why this happened, they need to hold the people responsible accountable It happened because most of the area hasn't burned since the 50s. I'm going to catch some heat, but, the proper thing to do is protect the structures, and let nature take its course. Fir...

I don't care for the homeless squatters calling themselves "prospectors," i'm referring to people that want to bring a pan and sluice box to play along the river. I used to frequent the river in the mid 90s but too many confrontations with hispanics, and homeless people, soured me to the a...

Re: San Gabriel Mountains could get new federal designation
I personally don't like the idea of the NP taking control over any parts of ANF. The first thing they would do is restrict access by banning activities. San Gabriel River is one of the last rivers in Southern California where you can still legally prospect for gold. As soon as the NP Nazis took over...

Re: Lonely summits and peaks
I think you'll find that the peaks listed on the Sierra Clubs HPS and LPS lists are visited quite often - certainly all of them have been visited since 1997! You will however, on any given weekend, have a good chance of being the only one on a lot of the peaks. Certainly the more mileage and elevat...

Cougarmagic,
Are you still using the SG550 camera? Was your camera directly on the trail to Mt. Williamson?
I think the bird is a Red Shafted Flicker.

I encountered two Southern Pacific Rattlers when I did a Cloudburst Summit to Buckhorn Campground loop. The first one (photo) was in the shade, and right on the trail, next to Cooper Creek. The second one slithered right past my left foot as I was finishing up from taking a leak. After shouting a fe...

I'm looking for something like water shoes, that are durable enough to withstand the abuse of following a stream for several miles. Does anyone have any experience with shoes designed for severe "water hiking?"
