Re: Amgen Tour, May 21 (Sat) - Mt. Baldy Limited Access

Hm, I really wanted to be in Manker or at the lift parking lot to see the Stage 7 finish. Are they blocking all non-resident spectators all day, or is there time to get there early and wait/tailgate/get in costume?

Or will I have to get dropped off the day before and bivy?

Re: Homebrewing SGM-style

I'm pretty sure I was good up until I pitched the yeast. I like to think I've got pretty good temperature/cooking control considering I'm a cook by trade. Most likely it went wrong at first fermentation - my packet of Wyeast was friggin' dead - didn't pick up on it until I check in a few days later ...

Re: Homebrewing SGM-style

I tried my hand at it last year, put together what I hoped would be a really nice, honeyed Trippel, but something went wonky with my yeast and I ended up with a fizzy, estery disaster. I left the last large bottle in my fridge, maybe I'll crack it open soon and see if the extra bottle aging helped a...

If anyone's interested, REI Outlet has Clif Shot gels in Raspberry and Vanilla for $.53 ea as today's DoD.

Applied my rebate, free store shipping, paid about $1 for two dozen :)

Re: REI Dividend - It's finally here!

12.97 Low enough that I can't really get any new, cool gadgets. So if I want to use it, I'll have to apply it to something more expensive, so I end up spending additional money anyway ("But you're saving money!"). It'd be cool if REI put up a "Convert dividend and donate to Red Cross&...

Re: supplementation for hiking?

Hammer and Gu look pretty much the same to me, ingredient-wise. Both are mainly maltodextrin (veggie complex sugar), some fruit sugars and flavoring, amino acids, preservatives, and a couple incidental vitamins or herbals. Beyond that, taste is subjective; just buy whatever you like better or can ge...

Baldy, 3/15.

I figured that since my sleep schedule of late has been pretty screwy (staying up until morning, sleeping until afternoon; the curious habits of the unemployed), and having no excuse not to, I would head out and hit Baldy yesterday. Staying up late = alpine start, right? I packed everything I needed...

Haha, yes, I've got priming via the valve down now, but early on I've had priming gas puddle into the snow in my vestibule unknowingly, leading to a pretty nice beachball of fire in an enclosed space :D

Re: Stove of the Week: MSR Whisperlite (pre-shaker jet)

Some half broken Colibri jet lighter I tossed in the stove bag one day and forgot about. It stops working high up thanks to the piezo, but I use it for lowland camping for a little standoff distance while priming. Would a good priming solution just be using a little bottle of white gas? Or is the al...

Yeah, I have one of the older, pre-shaker jet ones. Its only become an issue on 3+ day outings, but that's what the cleaner tool is for, and I've gotten simmering pretty dialed in on my Whisperlite :)

*Priming*, on the other hand..

Yay, finally! I have an early 90's (?) Whisperlite. Black bag, no pockets, old teal-and-white MSR logo. It has a braided metal fuel line and the hole in the reflector.

Very informative, great tips :D

I might overnight it in the bowl near the hut instead of trying to rally up so early and make pace with you guys.

What's the road/Manker like on Fridays during the day? Should I still go early, or does the workday/schoolday factor mitigate traffic and parking insanity?
