Re: Diamond Valley Lake Wildflowers

FYI they rent e-bikes at the marina. They are pedal assist ebikes, not the fully powered ones. I did the 22 mile ride around the lake with my dad on Easter Sunday. Not bad for a 77 year old guy! Get there around sunrise if you want to avoid the crowds.

Switzer Falls/Bear Canyon Trail Camp

I was looking to take my 7 year old daughter on backpack trip #5. The trail camps in the front range are always a good bet. They are easy enough for a kid, almost always have water and allow campfires. If you ask my kid, the whole point of camping is to make smore's by the campfire. My biggest probl...

Horsethief Creek runs year-round. Anything else probably dries up sometime in the summer.

Santa Rosa Wilderness

A friend of mine engaged in some non-essential travel to go on a backpack trip last weekend. I told him he is very naughty and made him promise never to do it again until this whole virus thing is over, even if his wife and kids are driving him crazy. Anyway, he did a one night trip in the Santa Ros...

Devil's Canyon Trail - fallen trees

Tried to hike the Devil's Canyon Trail today. Climbed over, under and around quite a few fallen trees on the way down. When we got to the bottom where the creek is (about 2 miles in) it got much worse and I turned around. I'm sure some members of this board would have kept going, but for this hiker ...

Re: Searching For Artifacts Below The Big Horn

What an adventure! Kuddos to you Crazy Hermit. I always admire the hardcore bushwackers on this board. I go off trail in the desert and above the treeline, but I don't have the stones to go through chaparral. Thanks for showing us the the real treasures deep in the bush. Great pics and commentary on...

Thanks for your replies Jeff and Eric. I stopped at the spring on my way back from Cucamonga Peak today. Filled my 3 liter Camelback in less than a minute.

Yes. Lots of mosquitoes and black flies. A minor drawback to our glorious rain season this year. My bites are almost all healed up now.

Nothing gets me more exited to hike in the San Gabriel's than John Robinson's Trails of the Angeles . And nowhere does Robinson wax more poetic than his descriptions of Cooper Canyon and the surrounding Pleasant View Wilderness. "Sparkling streams glide, dance, and tumble over boulders and casc...

Daddy/Daughter Backpack Trip

I was planning my next backpack trip when my four year old daughter asked me if she could come. I had been wanting to take her sometime later this year, but since she asked it was time for her 1st backpack trip! I decided we would hike from the Palm Springs Tram, Mountain Station to Tamarack Valley ...

There's a mixup going on here. I'm talking about RED TAHQUITZ peak, not to be confused with Tahquitz peak.

Red Tahquitz via Devil's Slide

I've been hiking the desert divide of the San Jacinto range recently. This is the ridge that divides Palm Canyon (by Palm Springs) from the pine country around Garner Valley and Lake Hemet. I was uninterested in these little bumps in my younger peak bagging days but I'm running out of new places to ...

Re: Hurricane Deck-West

Wow that's quite a long hike. I did a one night trip to Manzana Schoolhouse a few years back. I tried to hike the west deck but kept loosing the trail and had to turn back. I did a trip to White Ledge and hiked the east deck and the trail was better. I love the backcountry wilderness areas of Santa ...

Thanks for this. I had Tom Lucas on my list as a one night backpack trip. It sure would've been frustrating and disappointing to go all the way out there and not find the trail camp!

South Fork Trail - Big Rock Creek

I hiked the South Fork Trail from South Fork Campground to Islip Saddle on Sunday 4/28 with my brother. It starts on the desert side of the San Gabriels and ends at Hwy 2 in the middle high country below Mount Islip. I wanted to go after any snow on the upper trail melted but before it got too hot. ...

Re: Conditions of roads in and out of Idyllwild?

Yes, the typical routes (Highway 243 from Banning and the west side of Highway 74 from Hemet) will be closed for at least four months: https://www.desertsun.com/story/news/tr ... 144278002/ However, there are two alternate routes open: https://www.desertsun.com/story/weather ... 194743002/ Highway 7...

Gov't Shutdown Gate Closures

Does anyone know if the gate to Switzers picnic area is closed because of the shutdown? I saw a post on Instagram that showed the road to Millard Canyon is closed. It's already been posted on this forum that the gates to Chantry Flats are closed. Question #2 - Is there any rhyme or reason as to whic...

Hiked from Chantry Flats to Devore. Stayed overnight. Chantry Flats is a zoo (as always). Parking lot was full when we arrived @ 6:30 am. Flush toilet was overflowing in mens room. Paid for parking at the pack station. Packs of boy scouts and Korean hiking groups mulling about made me think the trai...

Re: Devore water?

Stayed at Devore Saturday night 11/11/17. Still good flow in West Fork of San Gabriel River. Enough for me to lie down in and wash off. Good water on the way out there too (Santa Anita Creek, Spruce Grove campground).
