Re: I have ascended to the ultimate in on the go nutrition

?

That reservoir was being replaced and I saw that 6LB can of nacho cheese ("gourmet!") was only $8. I figured that was a reasonable price to make myself laugh.

Nice work! I definitely need to get better at using Caltopo for stuff like that, I mainly just flip between layers to look at terrain.

Not saying I'll ever attempt that route, but I still bookmarked it...

Re: Angelus Oaks to Idyllwild Death March - unsuccessful attempt, trip report and photos

And if you're looking for more suffering, I once calculated the mileage and gain/loss for bagging the SoCal Triple Crown in one long hike via the PCT. Thanks for the comments! Just out of curiosity do you remember what the numbers came out to on that? It would be one hell of a hike, but never say n...

Re: Angelus Oaks to Idyllwild Death March - unsuccessful attempt, trip report and photos

AW, I've thought of doing some version of the Three Peaks Challenge (Baldy/Jacinto/Gorgonio) but the only way to finish in 24 hours, at least for me, would require shorter and less interesting routes I've done plenty of times already. I have considered doing a version without worrying so much about ...

Re: Angelus Oaks to Idyllwild Death March - unsuccessful attempt, trip report and photos

Awesome trip! When I read something like this, I begin wondering what the limits of human endurance are. If you didn't have a gaiter problem, could you have done the 90 miles? What about 120? 150? 200??? Does sleep become the limiting factor eventually? Assuming it was actually the gaiters, I'm pre...

Angelus Oaks to Idyllwild Death March - unsuccessful attempt, trip report and photos

[ TLDR : Attempted to hike nonstop and self supported from Angelus Oaks over Gorgonio, south on PCT, up Jacinto to Idyllwild. Made it 70 miles out of 90 before having to bail due to leg pain, stats and gallery at bottom.] Route and planning This hike was done two weeks ago, but I'm just getting arou...

Sounds like a fun outing, any pics? I'm a big fan of the Momyer trailhead, it's obviously a longer approach, but you get much more solitude than Vivian Creek. I always enjoy passing through Plummer Meadow just below the main ridge, with the wide open space and pretty regular stream with a nice chang...

We rejoined the trail from the road via a little connector before the gate, so I didn't actually see it. I assume it was open since we saw two vehicles drive partway down as we were hiking up the road.

The old toilets at Cabin Flat, still with vintage metal seats. cabinflat11.jpg Largest available campsite we found walking the old road that loops around. Cabin Flat overnight loop from Vincent Gap - trip report and photos

As mentioned last week , I wanted to do an overnight for a gear shakedown before a week long backpacking trip in Alaska next month. The voting system of reddit definitely has some disadvantages, plus the fact that any one subreddit (like /r/socalhiking) still exists within the larger context of the site as a whole. It's still more text based than something like instagram, so discussion is possible and happens, but it's easy to g...

Ah, I missed the part about the road closed past Guffy because section above just says "road in poor condition." Another trip report I found (from 2016 I think) mentioned driving there in a Prius! Upper Fish Fork sounds even better, but trickier to get to. I've never been on Pine Ridge, bu...

Camping at Cabin Flat or Lupine Campground? Other good hike in camping around there?

I'm doing a week long backpacking trip in Alaska in June and need to do an overnight gear shakedown! I'm trying to figure out a good place in the SGs that is hike in only and won't be crowded this weekend, so that rules out the stuff closer to LA or anything right along the PCT. Since I'm usually a ...

It looks pretty different in that view vs from below! I started at a small scree field that I'm pretty sure I've correctly identified in that photo at the bend just west of that little saddle. The middle section is very approximate, guess I should have used dotted lines! I don't have any photos as m...

Yeah, that area is pretty spectacular! Between that and the steep scramble to the west it's the coolest couple miles I've done in months! Seeing it from above and from your report on Grizzly Gulch, it certainly looks tough like you said. I'm impressed you made it so high with the condition of that r...
