Rattlesnake Peak
I've been dealing with some health issues (not COVID) but I'm back to normal and embarked on my first "hard" hike of the year on Sunday: Rattlesnake Peak. My buddy and I took the main route from Shoemaker Canyon Road. It was my first trip to Rattlesnake. We didn't have any issues with over...

Glad they found them. Our SAR is great. So this guy attempted to hike Triplet Rocks solo?

Re: SAR Seeking Help Identifying Location In Photo
I am pretty sure this is the ridge from Twin Peaks to Triplet. They ran a trace on the last phone call and it showed a similar location from where the call was made. It would also make sense to be able to get phone reception there. That makes sense. I can't imagine there being reception north of th...

I've never been on that trail. Looks nice. LPNF is always a nice escape from busy ANF.Uncle Rico wrote: ↑Not the Gabes, but atop Pt. 3016 along the Pothole Trail in the LPNF.20210307_134718.jpg20210307_134653.jpg

Slide Mountain
Slide Mountain has been on my list for a few years, but I've put it off because I thought it would be busy. I'm also not a fan of walking on pavement (the first 2 miles). Well, I decided to go out on Saturday and I'm very glad I did. I only saw 7 people on the trail and the walk on the highway was a...

Re: Snow on Smith
I didn’t see any closure signs, and I stopped to read all the stuff at the map/information board. Google Maps says that it is closed. Next time up that way I plan to turn right at the saddle and go up that higher peak, is that the route you are planning from the north? Yes, right at the saddle. htt...

Smith is awesome. Isn't it in the closure zone though? Did you see any signs?
I've been meaning to approach it from the north via the firebreak.

Nice adventure. I've hiked the fire road but never the ridge. I prefer it over the main route as it's less crowded.

Re: Triangular peak markers in the San Gabriels
I've been spending a lot of time in this area, mostly hiking the PCT. Beautiful area with low traffic! I was on the PCT near Burn yesterday.
Burn might be in this pic somewhere. It's facing N from the PCT so Burn might be on the left side.

Re: Sugarloaf Peak
"No bloody hands!" Lucky you! Thanks for the report. It's been awhile but I think the bypass is to the left of the falls, a series of steps and ledges along the wall. I don't recall a particularly easy way up the scree slope. To the right seemed best. was your profile pic taken while scre...

Re: Sugarloaf Peak
Nice TR! IIRC the "by-pass" is just to the left of the falls, closer than you'd expect. I think my first try was too far left, so I backed down and tried closer to the falls. It worked so maybe that is the trick. Others hopefully will chime in. Yeah, the hiker that I encountered said it w...

I forgot to mention that we saw what appeared to be a military helicopter (grey Blackhawk) fly through Icehouse Canyon pretty low. It was not the usual FS or FD chopper.

Sugarloaf Peak
I've been meaning to bag Sugarloaf Peak for a couple of years and finally got around to it last Saturday. My partner and I got a late start, hitting the Icehouse Canyon trailhead at about 11:30am. We lucked out and found parking just outside the main lot on Mt. Baldy Rd. We crossed Icehouse Creek an...

Round Top
I hiked to Round Top on Saturday. It was my first trip to the ANF since the Bobcat Fire began and my first hike in the Pacifico Mountain area in a long time. I forgot that it's hunting season, but I saw more trucks from parked hunters than hunters themselves. There are more annoying people that can ...

Does anyone know if the route from Dawson Saddle to Copter Ridge is open? It shows as open on the CalTopo map, but the forest order lists "PCT Dawson Saddle Trail" and "Dawson Saddle Trail" as closed.

Re: A bit of the aftermath
Good news. Thanks for the report! I'm not sure if it has been shared yet, but here's a CalTopo map of the closure area: https://caltopo.com/m/9KEQ I haven't checked to see how accurate it is, but it was shared by a user on ANF's Facebook page. That user was me. The map was actually Dima’s idea. So ...
