Re: Facebook group

Ha! I didn't realize FB was such a hot button issue on here...

I'll just keep sharing ANF news on the Hundred Peaks group. :)

Facebook group

Hey guys,

I'm new here, but this forum has already proved to be a valuable resource. The only other place I go for San Gabriel info/news is Hundred Peaks Section's Facebook group.

Have you guys thought about creating a private Facebook group for this community?

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

The Forest Service posted the following message on their FB page today: Highway 2 Sinkhole Update: 7/26/2017 9:45 PM From Caltrans Media Relations and Public Affairs The plan now is to secure the road enough so we can open it to one-way traffic control, which will be managed through flagged during t...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

It seems like motorcyclists own the 2 these days. Something must be done to improve safety. I pull over and give them plenty of space to pass. It's actually one of the safer mountain roads. But people go up there specifically to drive recklessly. I'm not advocating a ban on action racing movies. I'...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Quick message. 1. I laid eyes on Grassy Hollow today. The eastern closure is definitely at Grassy Hollow. That's unlikely to change, because... 2. I laid eyes on the hole in the road. It's west of Grassy Hollow about 1/2 mile. No equipment there, nothing going on. They filled it in with gravel/dirt...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

Someone just posted on the Hundred Peaks Section group on Facebook that the west end of the closure has been moved to Vincent Gap (from Islip Saddle). They say it could be another 2 months until the whole highway reopens though.

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

The 2 is still closed at Islip Saddle (I was there yesterday). The original estimate for the project was 30 days, which we're now past. I might call today to find out if they have a revised finish date.

Re: Books and websites

Do you guys have any recommendations for a good visual guide (book or website) that shows and describes the flora and fauna of the San Gabriel Mountains? I want to familiarize myself with all of the things that I've been coming across (and might come across). I've seen a couple websites, but they'r...

Re: 12/14/14 Hawkins Loop

Starting early to avoid the heat of summer months is generally a wise idea. Though you also want to be aware of sun exposure on different trails at different times of the day. For example, the Old Mt. Wilson Trail out of Sierra Madre is exposed to morning sun, because it was built on east-facing sl...

Re: 12/14/14 Hawkins Loop

I did the loop yesterday. I made the mistake of starting at noon and paid the price going up the Windy Gap Trail. I didn't realize the section was so hot and sunny. The conditions were better after Windy Gap, though. There's a section on the Hawkins Ridge Trail (near the junction with Crystal Lake R...

Re: 12/14/14 Hawkins Loop

Just wondering what the trail condition is. I was thinking of hitting the Modern Hiker route, which appears similar to route above. The standard route is Windy Gap Trail to Pacific Crest Trail to Hawkins Ridge Trail to South Mt. Hawkins Fire Road. Windy Gap Trail is in good shape. PCT is good. Hawk...

Re: Rattlesnakes

I hiked the San Gabes and O.C. state parks for 20 years in shorts. I saw plenty of snakes with no problems. Just don't stick your hands or feet where you can't see. Don't go wading through thick underbrush. Don't sit on a rock without poking around the base first with a stick. You will be fine. Con...

Re: Rattlesnakes

Hi Anthony, welcome to the forum! In my experience, rattlers are very unpredictable. Some will sit in the middle of a trail no matter what you do. I had to push a stubborn one off the trail with a stick once. Others will flee the moment they sense you coming. It's best to watch where you step, sit,...

Rattlesnakes

Hey all, My name is Anthony and I'm new to the forum. I came across two rattlesnakes on the way to Telegraph Peak yesterday. I almost stepped on the first one, which was hidden in a manzanita bush. Do you guys have any good resources on them that are geared towards hikers? I have a quite a few quest...
