Re: Cool Recycling/Food Storage Tip

Hmm, not sure it would replace ziplocs in my pack.

Here's what I do with plastic bottles:

After I am done, I collect the shattered bottles and leave them in the alley behind my house for the scavengers to collect.

Try sniffing around here: http://www.summitpost.org/phpBB3/pacifi ... wa-or.html

Though it's dominated by self-important blowhards, SummitPost still has a few good folks. Guys in that particular forum probably know the mountain well, too.

Re: Stickers! Stickers! Stickers!

Okey dokey, I have begun negotiations with the stickermakers (the old ones went out of business, so I am using the guys who have been printing my Mesa Tactical stickers for years). I will be printing all of these, ganged on one sheet: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm3.static.flickr.com/21...

Hmm, there's sticker potential there.

Ingrid and I spent the weekend at Sturtevent Camp with a couple of friends. On Saturday we hiked up to Mt Wilson, first time for me. What a gorgeous area that is. I really had no idea.

Re: New mountain dog

What type of dog is that? German Shepherd. I pick her up this weekend. The following weekend she will accompany me and the SOY kids along the Misha Mokwa trail in the Santa Monica Mountains. Ingrid or I will have to straggle along behind with the puppy, since she won't yet be up for such a long hik...

I'm not going to address the Gmap4 stuff. It looks like one of a variety of online mapping services that have popped up in the last few years (and I wish I had thought of doing this long ago). But here's a quick primer on how they are doing this. GPS devices collect data and can export it in a simpl...

Re: BackPacking with a dog

You should take your puppy out as soon and as much as possible so his feet get toughened up. Then he won't need booties. However, you should always carry booties, for emergencies. I have heard about people carrying their dogs out of the wilderness. Not fun. The booties are also useful when walking o...

Re: where is the terrorist Gadahn?

Gadahn's father is Phil Gadahn, who changed his name from Pearlman to Gadahn, reportedly as a biblical reference. Adam Gadahn was the oldest of Phil and Jennifer Gadahn's four children and they were home-schooled at their rustic shack near the small town of Winchester in Riverside County. Gadahn's ...

It would still be an "improvement." Unless the Forest Service considered the original spring box to be grandfathered. The Forest Service dismantled all those makeshift ski huts above South Fork Meadows because they were unauthorized improvements (even though they were built before the Wild...

Re: Gov't Shutdown?

The only way they can close National Forests to hikers is by closing the gates to the access roads. There aren't many places where they can do that. Of course, car campgrounds can and probably will be closed. By definition, in the event of a government shutdown no one will be able to patrol or enfor...
