Re: Hiking Shoes
I would not recommend Camp 4. Design of the tongue near the toebox allows too much dirt and small pebbles to accumulate there. I found that dirt eventually gets inside the shoes. I do like the sticky rubber and the heel support, so will be looking to buy one of Five Ten's other approach/scrambling ...

Is that the same road you take to get to the Lytle Creek Shooting Range? My god, that's a horrible road.

This is the ticket. Aspen Grove is a nice hike and saves you five miles and forty minutes of ball-busting dirt road.Rob wrote:Or park at Aspen Grove TH then hike up a few hundred feet to join Fish Creek TH. You drive past Aspen Grove TH to reach Fish Creek TH.

Great photos and captions, as usual. You're the next John Robinson. I have never heard of "Zahniser-Lake Saddle" until now. For a while I was thinking maybe it's a new name for Fish Creek Saddle, but I gather it's a name for the saddle between Fish Creek Saddle and Mineshaft Saddle? Edit: ...

An on-line friend of mine complained about the photo Wikipedia was using for their Mt Baden-Powell entry , so I mentioned I had a better one. He edited the article and - voilà! - my photo is now there instead. I bet there are a lot of Wikipedia articles that could be better illustrated by us folks o...

Re: Hiking Shoes
I bought some Merrel trail shoes last year for day hiking, but I have tender feet and have gone back to wearing my old (1982) Vasque mountaineering boots for any and all mountain hikes. They are heavy, but they also protect my feet a lot better on rocky trails. I use the Merrels for local conditioni...

Mt Baden-Powell the easy way, 7 Sep 2008
On Saturday my buddy Frank called to see if I wanted to go up Baden-Powell with him and his daughter the next day, and though they were going to start a lot later than I preferred, I said sure. I had failed to schedule a hike of my own this weekend. When we got to the end of Highway 2, it was sunny...

Gold is what drove local mining (generally). What other elements are commonly found with gold? How about asbestos and arsenic (at least in the Sierra Nevada)? Oh, and mercury was often used to separate out gold from the ore. Can you say "toxic?" Today cyanide is used to extract gold from ...

Those damned flies are still there? I'd have thought they'd be gone by now. That is a great trail. Lots to see up there.
One problem with hiking when you are already sick is it will not help you get better faster.

I've been a little confused about the parking. The side entrance to the Visitor's Center has a gate that's closed before 7:00am. I guess that isn't where you go to find the trailhead?

On the way down, we ran into a group of about 20 mountain bikers who apparently can't read signs and don't review beta on bike permissible trails in the San Gabriels. Don't get me wrong--I'm a big mountain biking fan myself. But how much fun can you have on a very busy trail where you have to stop ...
