I graduated from high school in 1980.
I've seen things you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion. I watched C-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhauser gate. All those moments will be lost in time... like tears in rain..

Therefore, Chambers said, "Since God knows everything, God has notice of this lawsuit."
Gotta admit, he has a point there.

Re: Cactus to Tram to Cactus, 11-Oct-2008
The main thing I want to mention is don't underestimate how hard downhill hiking is. When you climb big mountains, you are building up enormous amounts of gravitational potential energy. All this energy has to be dissipated when you go down. It's dissipated through your joints and muscles as you tr...

Weather looks good, I think I will drive up to Lone Pine this week to secure a day of entry permit and walk up the beast. I need to get away from work anyway.

Alan - Those two girls sure seemed real to me, but what I saw was so out of place (and at the same time very interesting) it wouldn't surprise me if I was hallucinating. But they were in good spirits and seemed perfectly capable of making it up there, with the weather that day being so cooperative....

Re: Baldy Bowl and Ski Hut Trail
I'll look around for some old photos and see what I can come up with. My father has lots of vintage slides from Baldy. I'll see if he has any of them climbing on piton rock. Recently I sent a few hundred 35mm slides to a service bureau in Utah that scanned them for me. Once they were digitized, I u...

How about someone marking the location with Acme Maps?

A16 was originally a wholesaler, supplying mountain shops, so that might have something to do with their survival.Hikin_Jim wrote:Thank God A16 has survived. They're a pretty good mountain shop. I guess they've survived by being good, 'cause they're definitely not the big guys.

. . . is like YouTube for grown-ups.
I just got an account. Once I work out this groups and channels stuff, I'm probably going to set up a channel (or a group) for SoCal climbing and mountaineering.
Here is my account, and an old video I uploaded:

Gear shops were put out of business not long after you were born by A16, Sport Chalet and REI. In the days of the mountain shops (before REI came to California) you had to drive around to a lot of different shops before you could find what you wanted, because each shop carried only one line for each...

Re: General Conditions
Basically, I'm just yakin', because personally although I am a rule follower, I would not want it to get to the point where there was a FS ranger at every trailhead checking permits.(that would ruin the experience) Actually, when I was a volunteer (around 1989-92), there was a ranger on every trail...

The permit system is not about keeping track, it's about limiting numbers. And with proper enforcement, the irresponsible ones are sent back down the mountain.Bill wrote:Unfortunately in reality they are only keeping track of the responsible ones!

That is a link to your entire Flickr photostream.
A better link would be to the set for the trip, in case you add more photos of other trips to your photostream later:

I have a complaint about those photos: not enough dog pics.

Sounds like a great trip.

If you put your dog on a leash, as is required in Wilderness Area regulations, you won't have to worry about her chasing bighorns off cliffs or squirrels into cactus.
