Re: East Ord Mountian (Mojave desert)

That's about an hour's drive from where I go shooting. Looks like fun. I gather you do your own routefinding up the mountain? It's pretty far from the San Gabriel Mountains, and you wouldn't see much unless it was a very clear day: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/www.summitpost.org/images/med...

(yawn) Yet another Baldy climb, 30 Nov 2008

After all the snow we got during the holiday, and after seeing a couple posts about it on SummitPost, I decided to climb Baldy again this weekend to check it out. I had to spend Saturday waiting around the house for a plumber who never showed up, so I went up on Sunday, something I normally try to a...

Re: Mt. Baldy (almost): 11-30-2008

The 2 people in sneakers were ahead of me and you must have been ahead of them. I assume Rick passed you on the ridge going up and then on the way down - he passed me on the way down just below the ski hut at about 10:30. Well, then the guy I spoke with at the Ski Hut probably wasn't Rick, since I ...

Re: Mt. Baldy (almost): 11-30-2008

This board is being overrun by weak sucks! I made it to the top, just in front of a couple who were wearing sneakers. I will confess, however, to stopping 450 feet below the summit to put on my crampons. They weren't strictly necessary as no one else I saw near the top was wearing them, but they gav...

Nice shots! Good filter (right?), yer new piece of camera gear. Looks nice! I strongly recommend a polarizing filter for mountain photography. I got the idea after seeing one of Tim's trip reports about a climb up Cucamonga, and he mentioned he was using a polarizing filter for the photos. The filt...

The real thing is forecast for this week.

What do you folks think it will be like next weekend if the forecast turns out correct? Too much avalanche danger for a hike or not enough snow to worry about?

Just another Baldy loop hike, 22 Nov 2008

I finally got my ass back up on Baldy again this weekend (I haven't been up there since June). This time I decided to try the loop up the Baldy Bowl Trail and down the Devil's Backbone Trail to the chair lift. I hand drew a GPS route and uploaded it as a Google Earth .KMZ file . I got started at 6:3...

Re: Fires, Fires and More Fires

I left my house at 5:00am on Saturday on my way to San Francisco and was turned around by the CHP at Sylmar. I could see flames on both sides of the 5. I had to drive all the way around the San Gabriel Mountains, heading out on the 118 to the 210 east to the 15 to 395 to 18 to 138 through Palmdale a...

Re: Chino Hills State Park

Before you get too upset, you might want to go there and see what remains.

I drove through the Grapevine on Sunday past burned areas in Sylmar and Santa Clarita and while all the grass was burned up, a lot of the live oaks seemed none the worse for wear.

Got this e-mail:
I called Theresa Hagner just now, please pass on the word that Rob was found at Baldy, not sure the exact details but they had to get him out by helicopter and he had minor injury to his wrist. She said thanks to everyone who helped pass out the word and for the good wishes.

Re: Best Day Hike in the SGs?

It's deer season now, and hunting is permitted all over the San Gabriel Mountains. As for day hikes, I personally enjoy climbing to a summit, and one of my favorite summit hikes is Baden-Powell, at 9,399 feet. It is easy to get to the trailhead at Vincent Gap, and the hike has an elevation gain of 2...

i like canned foods on 1 or 2 nighter trips. mainly because freeze dried sucks, and there's no trout in the local mountains. STAGG chili is the way to go. Ditto. Don't be hatin' canned food on short hikes! It tastes better than the dehydrated crap, and empty cans weigh a lot less than empty beer bo...

I don't know why they chopped them, as it's just a lone sport climb in the middle of nowhere. So very very few people climb around here that I don't see how anyone would get pissed at ethics over it. That, and it ain't exactly an easily protectable route. Maybe Halhiker was up there and couldn't fi...

I've had very bad luck with my GPS, but I seem to have narrowed the problem down to the antenna. I don't know why a small GPS would be any less accurate than a bigger one, since as Matt indicates it's all about the chipset and antenna. I find my GPS is worthless if I wear it on my chest or belt wher...
