Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

I was supposed to go shooting tomorrow near Joshua Tree. I just called the airport and they said there's still a foot of snow everywhere and the roads off highway 62 are pretty treacherous. He said forget about dirt roads. Anyone have any idea whether that snow will still be there tomorrow? What are...

Flickr, baby!

With a simple cut and paste, you can post Flickr photos like this, linked back to the photo page:

Revitalization project = condemn local businesses to sell the land to well-connected developers who will put in national chains and a BMW dealership.

It's a scam.

Re: Misc. News (Archive)

What I mean is that while I do not believe we are headed into a second Depression (which was truly the most traumatic event in American history since the Civil War, it's hard for us looking back to understand how bad it really was for the average American), we are probably about to enter the worst e...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Sounds like Saturday is going to be a nice day for a hike, but what about avalanche danger? My brother-in-law will be coming into town tomorrow, so I'm not sure I can get away Saturday. Sunday is reserved for shooting in the desert (promises to be a great day for it). Snow might also be kind of deep...

I once escaped jury duty on a capital case when in response to a questionnaire I (truthfully) pointed out that I was opposed to the death penalty.

Re: i need chains

I went to get some chains for my GTO and all they (Sears, baby!) had were cables since the GTO is Australian and uses some odd tire size. Someone once told me cables should be used on front wheel drive, not RWD like the GTO. Is that true?

I don't drink and drive, ever, so I'd like to combine this with spending the night down in the village (something I've been thinking about doing for a while anyway). To the motels and things get pretty full in the winter?

Polarizers do interesting things with the colors, too. This was one of the first photos I took in the mountains with a polarizer: I wouldn't get that same look with a daylight filter. Sadly, I have grown tired of carrying my DSLR around, and recently picked up a P&S to use on hikes, and there's ...

So if your reason for studying the Bible at length was to disprove it... While proof of the scriptures certainly has to be taken by faith, I would contend all other plausable explainations require more faith. My reason for studying it is because I believe all literate Westerners should be fa...

Michael has nailed two storms this fall three weeks before they made land fall. The first was in late October and the second was the one over Thanksgiving. While his estimates tend to be on the high side . . . That's my point. He has made several apocalyptic predictions that failed to come true. Li...

Gloves and mittens

I need to get something warmer for my hands, which are subject to pain and numbing from something called Reynauld's Phenomenon. I have been thinking about getting a nice pair of mittens, but don't see how these can be used when walking with an ice axe.

Does anyone use mittens with an ice axe?

Icehouse Canyon, 7 December 2008

Intending to summit Ontario Peak, I walked up to Icehouse Saddle this morning. It's still there, I'm pleased to report, but not so sure about Ontario Peak. It started drizzling on me at the Saddle, and of course here in SoCal that is something we simply do not have to put up with if we don't want to...
