There was "sign" all right. We found a cast-off snakeskin by the trail. Otherwise, no live snakes, but dozens of live lizards.Elwood wrote:Nice report and pictures Mr. Simonov. Any sign of rattlers ?

Mishe Mokwa Trail to Sandstone Peak, 15 May 2010
This weekend I led my fourth outing with the local after school program. We scheduled an exploratory climb along the Mishe Mokwa Trail in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area west of Malibu. I was pleasantly surprised by this spectacular hike through some of the most interesting and e...

That was quite a hike! I tried getting out to Kelly's Camp a few weeks ago, but found it hopeless trying to make a path through the snow. I wish I thought of going straight up, as you did.

Holy shit climbers can be such whiny little girls.
Maybe if there was more angst and drama on this board we would get more traffic.

Re: A funny thing happened on the way to the South Fork Trail
Oh, yeah, I forgot to mention, I ran into Patrick, Zach and Ellen at the Oaks post-hike. Nice to see Patrick and finally meet Zach and Ellen.
They had kiped all the South Fork permits that morning, so it is to them I owe my serendipitous hike up the San Bernardino Peak Trail.

A funny thing happened on the way to the South Fork Trail
8 May 2010 After reading about a number of recent expeditions up the South Fork Trail to the north side of Mt San Gorgonio, I decided to do the same, mostly, I guess, because I wanted to see Mt San Gorgonio before the snow melted. However, when I got to the Mill Creek Ranger Station to pick up the d...

Hey, Simonov, Aren't you supposed to be at Johns Meadow today? N00bs all bailed on Thursday night, so I canceled it. Instead I took a day hike up to Manzanita Spring. Much more fun than John's Meadow. Trip report to come. I hope you weren't up there looking for me. Took the non-trailer-queen up the...

Time for a roadtrip ! Yay, a road trip of epic body-roll proportions! ;-) Kids these days. They are pitifully unaware that the 1960s GM A-bodies had better suspensions from the factory than all but the sportiest cars today. This was before cheap crappy McPherson struts took over the industry. Some ...

There's snow for a few hundred feet below the Saddle, but crampons not really needed. Crampons would be useful on the way to Cucamonga Peak, since part of that route is north-facing, but probably not to Telegraph Peak. Great post, Jim. Looks like a nice walk, too. Not something I am likely to do since I always seem to have a destination in mind. I keep a copy of John Muir's Mountains of California in my backpack for reading in the evenings. I'm sorry to say that for the most part its is a very boring book, but one...

Someone obviously took a wire brush to a few of the rocks in the lower part of the canyon, but it doesn't come off that easily and the dipshits came back and made new blazes with white paint.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
Saturday is going to be perfect climbing weather!
Anyone have any ideas what the avalanche danger will be like on Baldy so soon after new snow?
I do believe I will try to climb Ontario Peak. I don't think there are any avalanche fields along the traditional route, are there?

I wonder if volunteer workers, like high school kids, could help.Packing brings in from $10 to $400 a day, but it's only done twice a week and rarely earns enough to pay the $1,100-a-month feed bill, not to mention vet bills and payroll.
