Bighorn Peak, 10 Jul 2010

Nothing much to say about yesterday's hike up to Bighorn Peak via Icehouse Saddle, it was nothing special. However, I would like to point out, especially for those who don't think there is any solitude or wilderness left in Southern California, than on a nice Saturday morning in July I didn't run in...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

As of yesterday, 10 July, there is basically no water coming out of the spring at Kelly's Camp:

I will be leading a group of backpackers up there in two weeks and we will be filling up at Columbine Spring below the saddle.

Re: San Gorgonio via Fish Creek 7/4/10

Great TR! Our scout troop will be heading up there in three weeks and will be camping at Fish Creek Saddle. It looks like Lodgepole Springs will be our closest water source? Lodgepole is the closest, a half mile away. It's kind of a bitch, because hauling all that water back up the draw is hard wor...

Re: San Gorgonio via Fish Creek 7/4/10

Wow, nice detailed trip report. That's my favorite approach to San Gorgonio; I only wish there was water at Fish Creek Saddle. Carrying water back up the draw from Lodgepole after a day of backpacking is never pleasant (I normally start at Aspen Grove trailhead to avoid the bone-jarring five miles o...

Re: Those lovely-smelling yellow flowers along the highway

I noticed the business about it being invasive in the Wikipedia article, but you only see them on the highway shoulders, never above and never below.

Apparently, seed pods burst in the autumn. I will try to remember to gather some seeds then.

Those lovely-smelling yellow flowers along the highway

I have noticed this year a profusion of bushes with yellow flowers along the Baldy Road as well as along Hwy 38 between the turnoff to Forest Falls and and Angelus Oaks. The flowers smell great, a sweet fragrance a little like cookies baking. They are distributed right along the highway rights of wa...

The public has used the trail continuously for more than a century, creating a "prescriptive" right to continued access, he said. A Ventura attorney who stepped forward to help Keep Access agrees. William Slaughter said he argued a similar case in Ojai a few years ago and won the public's...

Thanks for the report, especially about the spring. I was worried about that.

Kelly's Camp is one of my favorite places in the San Gabes. I haven't anything scheduled there for a while. Maybe I'll have to do a quicky overnight during the Independence Day weekend.

Okay, so maybe we should get back to answering the request in Ze's original post. Off the top of my head, quantitative information to capture: o Destination (name of a peak, etc) o Route (eg: via would be the title for the entry; loops and shuttles would have to be handled a little differently, mayb...

Re: The SoCal Hike Project

These are all just pages in blogs, right? What would be really cool is if this was all backed by a database, so that quantitative information (length of hike, elevation gain, difficulty rating, etc) can be captured in fields and you could build custom, sortable tables of hikes. Like what this guy ha...

Seems to me, that this prominence needs a look-see with a register in hand. hmm?... I was concerned I might be making a mistake when trying to identify it, but I'm pretty sure now I am not. Bridge to Nowhere with the kids, 19 June 2010

While you guys were kicking your own asses this weekend on seldom-visited ridges, I escorted a group of 14 teens and five adults to the Bridge to Nowhere. Holy cow, was there a lot of people. I assumed there was some kind of special function going on, but no, it's just a popular trail in the summer ...

I think it's important to make a distinction between responsibility and blame. I agree. In fact, I'm a little sick of the modern tendency to find someone to blame, for everything. But what is irritating about the current case are the continuous prevarications and lies and ass-covering that has char...

I didn't notice any ticks. Seems they're not out in force yet. However, there were a ton of light brown biting flies, about 1/2in long. A friend of mine just brought home three of these after spending a weekend in a park in the UK: https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm5.static.flickr.com/4022...
