Re: pot in cow canyon

The fact that alcohol is legal and therefor more widely used would suggest there is a bigger problem, and my contention is that pot's use will increase, which means it's problems will increase. The problem is not caused by pot or alcohol any more than it is caused by cars. The problem is irresponsi...

Re: pot in cow canyon

I'm not suggesting that (Pot) is necessarily worse, just different and impairs at least as much. So? Then we already have remedies for driving under the influence. You seem to think that mere laws keep people who want to from smoking pot. Yet you challenge the efficacy of laws we already have on th...

The Vivian Creek trail sux anyway.

Hiked it last month for the first time in 20 years. Now I know why I waited 20 years to do it. If it takes another 20 years for me to hike that trail again it will be too soon.

Re: pot in cow canyon

The affect of Pot is different than alcohol, as you may or may not be aware sometimes the user becomes a little paranoid which can magnify their impairment. Does that answer your question? Many people become belligerent when drinking alcohol. I would expect that would be an even bigger problem when...

Re: pot in cow canyon

Like siminov said, tobacco is probably at the threshold for black market growth right now. Whereas I don't know of black market alcohol being a success. Alcohol remains cheap, even with all the taxes. Alcohol can be as harmful as tobacco, but it has to be abused, while tobacco causes harm through c...

b/c no one will be buying it from them Why not? Prices must be allowed to drop enough to undercut the prices the cartels sell for. That will not happen once all the fees and taxes associated with permits and licenses are factored into the legal market price. Plus add in the expenses of running a le...

That's why "decriminalization" is pointless, and full legalization (ie, treat it like tobacco or alcohol) will deliver the benefits. Full legalization. Does that include all of the requisite regulations by the FDA, etc.? Whatever bullshit is associated with tobacco and alcohol, yep. But i...

Right, on smuggling cocaine. Do you honestly think the cartels will just stop smuggling pot if its legalized in California? Why would they stop? They will stop when it becomes unprofitable. That's why "decriminalization" is pointless, and full legalization (ie, treat it like tobacco or al...

Everyone makes their own choices. The parent who says, "I don't want my children exposed to it" is gravely mistaken. Believe it or not, children WILL make their own decisions regardless of how "easy" or "hard" it is to obtain a substance (which is actually a joke). I a...

Re: pot in cow canyon

You don't see legalization leading to an increase of it's use? Not much. Most people who will ever want to use cocaine and other narcotic drugs are already getting them. If cocaine were legalized tomorrow, I wouldn't use it. Would you? Do you personally know anyone who, today, is just itching to ge...

Why expose society to another layer of problems, on a gamble? This statement assumes that society isn't already exposed to these "problems." No prohibition in the history of free societies has ever worked. Not one. On the other hand, almost every single one has brought with it an increase...

Right, on smuggling cocaine.

Except for a test of one of our new shotgun stocks last month at the LAPD Davis Training Center I haven't been shooting since January. Getting rusty. I need to get out again soon. Great report, Jim. I wonder how the Forest Service would feel if certain public-spirited citizens were to start maintaining that trail?

BTW, the white stuff you can see beyond Big Bear is the Omya Lucerne Valley limestone quarry.

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

Simonov, do you consider the water from Columbine safe to drink without filtering? Since it comes right out of the mountain, I would say yes, unequivocally. But then I never treated my water until very recently when I started hiking with a Katadyn, which I use as much for the convenience of pumping...

Re: Kellys Camp Spring (Ontario Peak Trail)

I just carry my own water up from Columbine Spring and suggest other people do the same.

The realization that Kelly's is the only water available at those elevations for the bighorns, deer and other animals that live up there makes me reluctant to suck the pool dry with my Katadyn.

I personally know 5-6 members of the SB Cave Rescue team and respect their judgment I gotta wonder, though: why the helicopter evac? Helicopters are dangerous. The risk of injury or death is probably greater taking the helicopter ride than hiking back out. If there were no injuries, why the urgent ...

San Gorgonio Wilderness traverse, 3-6 Sep 2010

After thinking about it for literally decades, I finally executed a multi-day traverse of the San Gorgonio Wilderness via the San Bernardino Divide Trail. Basically, I took four days to make the hike Elwood made the week before. Frank and Ingrid came with me. The route started at Angelus Oaks and ba...
