There are possibilities here . . . for the next batch of Eispiraten stickers.

Re: Mt. Whitney March 10-13, 2011

After I typed that up, I thought of ropes/etc that they may have tried to stick on you guys, even though you might not want to rope up, etc. That would be a bummer. No, the guides carried all the ropes. I'm sure their packs were heavier than ours, because of that (except maybe April's, she is small...

Re: Mt. Whitney March 10-13, 2011

I'm confused on this. Did you think they were going to pack and carry tents and food for you guys? Sort of. It was going to be a "special" arrangement. But as I said, it was a misunderstanding. What communal gear did they require you to carry that you wouldn't already need to take with yo...

Re: Mt. Whitney March 10-13, 2011

Looked a tad nippy on top. Way to go guys. A Whitney winter ascent is an accomplishment. 60+ pound packs is pretty good too. Holy cow, it was the coldest I have ever experienced in the notch (at the top of the couloir, at the bottom of the "final 400 feet"). It was high and windy ...

Whoa, just got back after a few days on Mt Whitney and see many new n00bs. I think those stickers are having an impact.

My last couple times on Baldy, I must have left fifty or more stickers in the register. They keep getting grabbed.

Yeah, we headed back down from about 9,500 and when we got to the Ski Hut the clouds had moved in, obscuring the summit.

Re: Stove of the Week: MSR Whisperlite (pre-shaker jet)

So now I know why my (shaker) Whisperlite doesn't simmer worth a damn. That's too bad, since it's the main reason I don't use it. That's a good tip wrapping the windscreen around the fuel bottle, and also using alcohol to prime. Those old stuff sacks with the internal pockets were nice, too. It kind...

Clearly, in the mind of a typical Newport Beach resident, that indicates there is no speed limit at all!

Begs the question then, what kind of family would allow this behavior to continue? The parents should be exposed for what they are (poor) and punished for what they have apparently allowed to happen here. Same people who posted $100,000 bail to spring her. Nothing is too good for our little Madison...

I might ruffle some feathers, but this is my opinion and dammit, I gotta say it for once. I hold back too much. I have a different opinion, however, probably also stemming from military experience (small unit tactics, special operations kinda stuff), where a lot is required of a small team of very ...

There can be no doubt that a lighter pack allows you to move faster, farther, higher. But there is a cost to everything. I am the opposite of an ultralight hiker. I tend to carry a lot of stuff that I typically never use "just in case" (especially in winter, when "just in case" c...

Still, how heartless do you have to be to oppose the construction of paved roads to the summits of all local mountains?

Who among us would deny Tiny Tim a Segway ride to the top of Mt Baldy?
