Re: Baldy via Backbone, 1/19 - 1/20
Cut to an hour or so later, and the Sheriffs put a couple helicopters on Harwood. Chatted them up to fill them in, and they took off down the mountain to snag him off that slope (which was cool as hell - pics and vids to follow). Didn't get to see the rescue itself, as we were running out of daylig...

Well, we have a couple weeks to hash it out. Anyone want to leave those dates open?
BTW, and completely unrelated, here's a fun video I just found:

Re: Three Tees shuttle
Thanks for the comments. If I bring a group it will have to be over trails and not too difficult. I liked the idea of starting over on the Baldy side because it gives you a taste of Baldy while letting you bag three summits on the way over to Ricehouse. Coming out Chapman would add mileage, but I ha...

Three Tees shuttle
I would like to scout the Three Tees trail in preparation for a group hike in March or so. What I was thinking of doing was starting at the top of the chair lift and then taking the Three Tees into Icehouse Canyon and out for a shuttle (maybe take the Chapman trail down the canyon). I've never done ...

Re: Three Tees Trail (3 T's)
I was just up there as far as Timber Peak on Sunday ( https://www.youtube.com/embed/WtZL6O452js ). I did not have crampons, but they would have been very useful down in the lower part of Icehouse Canyon, as the snow that was there last week is now treacherous ice. Above the Saddle it is an easy hike...

Did I screw that up? I was delirious after the walk to the Saddle. I'll have to add some subtitles.TacoDelRio wrote:Nice video!
Not to be too picky, as you probably know the names now, but the 3-T's are, from N-S:

Telegraph Peak 8985'

Re: Chapman Mt or Timber Peak?
Can anyone who has been there tell me what's at the top of Timber Peak? The peak I was on ("Chapman Mt") had a signpost with two wooden signs that had all their lettering weathered off a long time agao, plus the register in the mailbox set into the tree. It looked like there might have bee...

Chapman Mt or Timber Peak?
Yesterday I go to what I thought was the top of Timber Peak and found a register for "Chapman Mt." I can find only one other reference to "Chapman Mt" on the web, and John Robinson doesn't mention it either. Can anyone tell me what's going on here? According to Google Earth, the ...

Re: Mount Baden-Powell, Burnham, Throop Peak and Lewis
You are hard core, that deep snow just slows me down. I didn't hit much snow yesterday on the Three Tees, luckily. I have never seen it so clear! My view from the mountain tops was obscured by trees as I was never above the treeline, but driving home through Chino I couldn't believe how clear and cl...

I was in Ricehouse Canyon again, up to Timber Peak.
Beautiful day for a hike. I was wearing a thin nylon shirt with an undershirt, and it was around 50 degrees most of the time.

I was looking at Baldy (from Costa Mesa) this morning and it appears not to have any snow. Was it all washed away this week? No snow northeast of Mt Wilson either:

That looked like a great hike. I was just up there last month. I was thinking of doing Modjeska and Saddleback this month except Modjeska is just inside the fire closure area . I take it you didn't have any problems with rangers or JBTs? The road to the trailhead is really unbelievable. I didn't eve...

Ontario Peak attempt, Icehouse Saddle, 16 December 2007
As a preface, I haven't done much hiking in the San Gabriels since I was a Boy Scout in the seventies. I was a Wilderness Volunteer Ranger at San Gorgonio for a few years some time ago and I had somehow got the idea the San Gabriels, with all those highways running through them, weren't wild and rem...

The hills are alive with the sound of . . . Korean!
Yesterday of the twenty or so people I met on the Icehouse Canyon trail below Icehouse Saddle, well over half were Koreans. They weren't all there as part of one or two large groups, either; two men and a separate group of three started the trail around the same time I did. As I came down, I encount...

Thanks guys. Things are becoming more clear. I also have a Garmin eTrex Vista Cx, which I purchased a couple of years ago. It came with a USB cable. What I have is the plain old black ad white eTrex Vista, which comes with a serial cable, not a USB. I thought this was ridiculous at first (see my sna...

How to upload data from GPS to PC
I have a Garmin eTrex Vista and have no idea how to upload the track data from the GPS unit to my PC. The manual says nothing. Garmin's website is useless (search broken, nice). Got the serial cable (OMG! Serial? In 2007?) connected and everything, but no obvious way to suck the data out of the unit...

Yesterday was a great day for a hike in the front range. Gets a bit hurried towards the end, but there was too much going on to fit it all into five minutes.
A fun and relatively easy hike, with lots of history.

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
Ontario early-on will probably be a good place for snowshoes. I think they got rid of the dead trees blocking the trail, making it a bit friendlier. Maybe the weekend before Christmas is the one when I pop my showshoes cherry. I'll plan on doing Ontario or Cucamonga that weekend and rent some snows...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow
I was thinking about doing Cucamonga or Ontario, maybe the weekend before Christmas. One of these days I would like to start snow hiking, with snowshoes and/or crampons, but not without some help. In the meantime I was hoping the dryfoot season wasn't already ending. Another storm coming this week. ...
