Re: ODC vs. Sierra Club

Leader implies responsibility while demanding no self-reponsibility? But a a coordinator implies no responsibility but demands self-responsibility? I say both of those are not wise choices...more like the reality is to imply no reponsibility but also demand no self-responsibility either. People hav...

I understand what you're saying as far as providing a means for getting people together and getting people off their duffs. But I don't see much difference between this free forum and clubs such as ODC and OCHBC, except the money. Either way you go, you have no idea what kind of group you will end ...

Re: ODC vs. Sierra Club

I don't see the point of ODC. If they issue disclaimer after disclaimer that they aren't responsible for anything, then why does anyone pay them for doing something a free forum like this one can do? I see the point. In fact, I am hiking and backpacking again because of a similar group, the OCHBC. ...

What was the snow like? What time did you start? I've been wanting to hit Baldy again this month, but I thought maybe the snow was getting too slushy and slippery. I was up on Saddleback (Santiago) yesterday, a summit with spectacular views in all directions, and was amazed how high the snow level h...

Re: Hiker missing near Mount Baldy since 2/27/2008

So how many people have we lost in the San Gabriel Mountains during the first two months of 2008? Four so far (two to avalanches, two to falls)?

BTW, check out these photos of the Icehouse/Bighorn area from a week ago. It would be pretty scary to start sliding down on that stuff.

By now you folks are aware of my tradition-minded bent with regard to gear, the most famous example hereabouts being my photogenic teak ice axe. But it doesn't stop at Italian ice axes. This last weekend I went on my first backpacking outing in about nine or ten years, using the REI external frame p...

I have heard on other forums they are difficult to rent, as there is some kind of concern about liability, but I have rented them twice without any problem at all at my local REI in Santa Ana. Maybe different stores have different policies. There's doubtless an REI near you, so call them to see whet...

I’m eager to get up there again with an earlier start and a helmet. We didn’t have any falling rock but those giant speeding snowballs might sting, or worse. I'm going up above Icehouse Saddle or maybe Baldy again on Saturday, and will start at dawn. Weather.com says there might be a light dusting ...

Simonov and He219's Mount Baldy Ascent, 20080209

He219 contacted me at about 4:00pm on Friday night and asked if I was interested in heading up to Mount Baldy at 3:00am the next morning (we live a couple miles away from each other). I am an early riser anyway, so I said okay, all I had to do was rent some crampons at REI. We were on the trail by a...

Thanks Kathy. I think it's the way the website is set up for the Outdoors Club that makes people think they are going on a hiking trip with a Sierra Club type leader.
