Re: 3 Day Backpacking including Mount Lowe Trail Camp -> Tom Sloan Saddle -> Bear Canyon CG -> Dawn Mine -> Echo Mountain

I did the entire route as a loop from Red Box. Some one last fall cleared up the route from the top of Bear Canyon to the CG where it used to be a complete bushwhack and put up the tape you saw on the trees for their route creation. From the CG to Switzer is a clear trail with no issues. Both trail...

Re: Mt. Lowe Road (2N50)

I was up there yesterday doing a lollipop run from Eaton Saddle and there is quite a bit of rockfall on the far end of Mueller Tunnel. Easy to scramble over, but still quite a large amount of debris from the hill above.

Re: Newly Restored Tom Sloan Trail

Finally had a chance to hit the Tom Sloan trail this morning. Nice job on the trail work! It's still in great shape. Did you notice any damage from the recent storms? Downed trees or washouts? No downed trees. A couple of spots in the corners where the water running down from higher up the hill was...

Re: Newly Restored Tom Sloan Trail

Finally had a chance to hit the Tom Sloan trail this morning. Nice job on the trail work! It's still in great shape. Didn't look like it's seen a whole lot of traffic recently, most recent tracks being those from a bike. Ran it from Mt Lowe Rd to Tom Sloan Saddle and it was so nice to just be able t...

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)

I ran the section between redbox and the turn off to switzer falls / bear canyon a couple of weeks ago and it was in great shape. There were a two or three spots of deadfall that you had to clamber over or under once you got to the bottom of the main decent from redbox.

Was up there yesterday and there is a little bit of water flowing immediately to the west of the trail camp. Upstream was bone dry so was sort of surprised to see flow just to the west of the camp

Re: Eaton Saddle CCW Lollipop via Switzer

I will note that I found the first tick I've ever come across in the San Gabes on my arm when I stopped at the Tom Sloan Saddle, so probably picked it up in the section coming uphill. Wasn't attached, was just there. Gave myself a good once over when I got back home and found no other pesky hitch hi...

Eaton Saddle CCW Lollipop via Switzer

Things have been busy and I haven't been able to get out on trail as much as I would like recently. I decided to rectify that by doing a lollipop out of Eaton Saddle. The plan was to go CCW from Eaton Saddle, past SG Peak & Disappointment, down Bill Riley to the road, road to Gabrielino, Gab dow...

Spain - Picos de Europa National Park - Torre de Horcados Rojos

Recently while on a two week trip to Spain I managed to sneak in a day trip to the Picos de Europa National Park. Originally we had planned on doing an overnight and staying at the Refugio de Urriellu at the base of Naranjo de Bulnes and tagging Torre Cerredo, the highest peak in the Picos. Due to t...

Re: Gabrielino Trail (Big Santa Anita - West Fork - Arroyo Seco)

I was out there the 18th and saw the deadfall that you spoke of between Redbox and Valley Forge. Had my little silky saw with me and managed to clear a lot of it until the tip of my saw snapped. Cleared out a lot of the small stuff that was surrounding it, but the main branch that was across the tra...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

I got up early and hit the trail up Register Ridge at 6:00 this morning. About an inch or two at Manker and around 8-10 on the ground up to 8400'. Thinner where it was windblown, thicker in the drifts. Lots of rime ice... https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/farm5.staticflickr.com/4702/39909389134...

Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Fresh powder on Baldy. Go get some before it melts! From looking at the zone area forecast for Baldy from tonight through Saturday evening it looks like there could be a total of 10-20 inches of new snow at the top, and 6-12 inches at Manker Flat. Might head up early Sunday morning with some spiky ...

Re: Brown Mountain loop

I covered the section from Tom Sloane Saddle to the Ken Burton Trail today. From the Saddle to the top of Brown Mountian it was pretty clear. As said above it's a decent use trail. I brought my pruners and cleaned up a little buckthorn that was encroaching in a couple of spots. Now from Brown to Ken...

I awoke to my alarm on Sunday the 17th at 6:00, ensuring I’d make it up out of my bag to wander up to the edge and watch the sunrise. As I walked up the other two fellows who had slept on the summit were still fast asleep in their tents. Not long after though a few other intrepid hikers made their w...

I awoke early on Saturday the 16th to watch the sunrise over Sky Blue Lake and the Miter Basin and found a layer of frost covering most of the gear that we had left out overnight, including our bear cans and the shelters. I just got back and didn't see any signs of a closure. I only went up as far as where the ski hut trail branches off, but I saw plenty of people coming across the top of the backbone trail when I got to the top of Harwood via Register Ridge.

Thanks. I tried Valley Forge awhile ago after a rain. I got drenched by the damp, overhanging brush. Then I noticed some poodle dog and gave up and turned around. Wasn't in the mood for PD. Sounds like the PD is mostly gone now. Guess I'll give it another shot. It's actually not in bad shape, just ...
