Re: San Gorgonio Peak loop 8/20/2016

Thanks Guys! Appreciate the feedback on the loop and the TR. While by most standards I kept a pretty good pace over the course of the loop, I was hoping to move a bit faster. After sitting down and ruminating things I think I've come up with a reason why my pace was off. Most of last year and a the ...

San Gorgonio Peak loop 8/20/2016

This TR could probably be titled a few ways - "Best laid plans something or other..." could be one. "How I was overly optimistic estimating my pace and total time on trail when planning" would be another fitting one, but I'll get into that later. A little bit of backstory on how ...

Re: Mt. Langley 14042' the easy 14er, so they say

Indeed.. Timing was perfect. Weather was great while we were up there too.. And as far as the easiest CA 14'er - I'd say that has to go to White Mountain Peak, especially if you go up on one of the open gate days. 11 miles round trip, with only 3K of elevation gain total since you start off at the B...

Re: Mt. Langley 14042' the easy 14er, so they say

There were two other small groups camped at Muir Lake. One on the east side, one on the west side and we were camped on the north side. Since google axed picasa it's hard to link google photos so here's a link to a pic I took from the ridge north of Muir Lake: https://goo.gl/photos/1nuAMKBbEonpM562A...

Re: Mt. Langley 14042' the easy 14er, so they say

Seems to have been a popular weekend to be up in that neck of the woods! I was up there with my wife this past weekend. We camped at the trailhead camp on Friday Night and camped on the north shore of Muir Lake Saturday Night..

Re: Harwood via Register Ridge

So not being satisfied with the amount of time it took me to make it to the top of Harwood via Register Ridge the previous weekend I went back out this Sunday Morning and gave it another go. Went up in one push this time, with no breathers between Manker and Harwood. First time up it took me 1:50 mi...

Re: Adventure Pass lawsuit settlement

I go to a lot of national parks, both with my family and with my son's boy scout troop so I always buy the national parks pass or whatever they call it now. It covers the adventure pass use fee so I display it when I need to, like when I park at Chantry Flats. At a place like the Baldy notch trail h...

Re: Harwood via Register Ridge

I saw 3 people on the way up total, one coming down and two that I passed going up. Saw about a dozen coming up on my way down, and at that time I was thinking that it was waaay too late to be chugging up that ridgeline. Probably going to head back up next Sunday morning and see if I cant do a littl...

Harwood via Register Ridge

Needed to get out and keep my legs in good hiking shape and having never done it before I decided to tackle Register Ridge this past Saturday Morning. Got up early and was at the trailhead at Manker Flats about 5:45. Air quality was pretty crappy due to the smoke from the Sand fire blowing into the ...

Re: Cottonwood Lakes Basin

I love that area! I'm taking my wife up there the first weekend of August for her first backpacking trip. Makes sense as it's relatively close to home and a short hike in with minimal elevation gain to some awesome scenery.

Re: Offroading Coyote Flat

Thanks for the kind words everyone. We went back up with a group of 8 land rovers over the 4th of july weekend. We left the LA area around 7 on Friday morning and rendezvoused with the group at Vons in Bishop around 12:30. A pretty uneventful drive up to the flat. An LR3 on the trip vapor locked at ...

Re: Offroading Coyote Flat

Thanks! I got my truck in order to get further off the beaten path and get access to trail heads and camping areas that arent frequented by people with normal cars. So far it has worked out great. We're going to bag Vagabond and Cloudripper on Sunday morning. Being able to drive to the end of the tr...

Offroading Coyote Flat

For those not familiar with the area Coyote Flat is located due southwest from Bishop. It's a large open plateau located at about 10K feet, with a network of rough gravel tracks that snake their way through the hills in all directions. It's bordered by the Owens Valley on East, the Valley in which S...

Re: Baldy holiday

It was a great day to be up on Baldy. I was up there a bit earlier than you were. I went up to the backbone trail, topped out on Harwood, then side hilled around Baldy away from last bit of switchbacks and made my way to the summit. Had the summit all to myself while I was there, which is a rare occ...

Re: Angeles Crest Highway (CA-2)

I was up at BP last weekend, started at Dawson saddle and saw plenty of cars coming from the direction of Wrightwood so it's safe to say that the road is open all the way through. We came up from La Canada and the ACH was open past Islip with no signs of closure any further on.

Re: Baden-Powell 2-20-16

We went up from Dawson Saddle. No snow on the summit. A couple very small patches where we had to be extra careful on the trail. Nice to hear that they finally have the road open between Islip and Vincent. I went up there last Sept and had planned on hiking from Dawson saddle. Got to Islip to find ...
