Re: Santa Rosa Island, Channel Islands NP w/ my 3 1/2 yo son
I didn't know the Torrey Pines in La Jolla weren't doing well, sorry to hear that
I've been hiking there several times, the last time with my son when he was about 10 months old.
Santa Rosa is definitely worth the effort and wind - it felt much more wild than Santa Cruz, in a good way.

Good article on flash floods
"Many Southern California recreationists don’t understand the floodwaters that created the rock- and boulder-strewn, 100- to 200-foot wide channels they’re walking in or along -- especially when there’s no more than one- to two-foot wide ribbons of water running through them normally, Taylor said ...

Hilton Lakes Backpack Trip & Bear Encounter
"I haven't seen a bear for awhile, so I'm overdue for an encounter," I told Albert and Debra on Thursday night at Rock Creek Lake Campground. On Friday night a Mamma bear and cub came within 40 feet of my tent at Hilton Lake #2. I had just retired for the evening when I heard a thump and a baby bear ...

Nice - same trip and same itinerary as we did in November. I loved it. We didn't see anyone between Beartrap and the rocks at Piedra Blanca. The real Pine Mountain Lodge site was my favorite spot - so beautiful.

My sister Kristine and I backpacked to Havasu Falls near the village of
Supai in the Grand Canyon last week. This has been a trip on my bucket
list for quite some time. I had a horse-packer friend who did the trip
to chronicle the delivery of mail - this is the last place in the US where

Great pics - we've spent two past New Year's camping on the Salton Sea and hav enjoyed the mild weather, birds and also went kayaking. I love nearby Mecca Hills - have you hiked there? Re: Redwoods in San Gabriel Mountains
There are coast redwoods and giant sequoias planted at nearly every picnic ground, camp ground, and ranger station in Southern California - they do not occur down here naturally. Closest coast redwoods are just a little ways north of San Simeon. Closest giant sequoias are near California Hot Springs ...

Re: Santa Monica Mountains Wildflowers
Nice pics! We went this week as well after we heard about the good bloom. If I didn't have my 3 year old son in tow, I would've tried the La Jolla Valley location - but I did that Chumash Trail once and it's too steep for my kid. But we did find some really nice displays on the Pentachaeta Trail and ...

We went up to Wrightwood and Vincent Gap on Tuesday - one of the first ones up after the plows cleared the road. Played in the snow with my 3 year old son. It was a gorgeous day! Hopefully this link works for y'all.
