Re: A mine and a gully to Devil's Canyon

Nice photos! That mine is actually called the Boatman Mine, although Bell and Hartman also worked it for awhile. So did Charley Chantry of Chantry Flat fame. It was actually mined for Molybdenum, an alloy used in steel production, but it was a complete bust. Nevertheless, it's one of the coolest min...

Re: Old mine in South Fork Lytle Creek..?

Gold was discovered in Lytle Creek in 1864. For awhile there was a huge gold rush in that area with over 100 prospectors, mostly along the north fork. Texas Point was the first area in the Southern California that ever used hydraulic mining, which was very destructive, but it worked. Some of the cla...

Re: Marijuana Season Still Continuing...

That would be a huge area to cover. And probably risky for the pilots. I'm glad they're sending out warnings though. Most hikers will never run into these guys, they try to choose remote areas where people don't go. I'm more worried about booby traps than the farmers.

Re: Marijuana Season Still Continuing...

Several years ago I was held at gunpoint in a side canyon on the east side of the San Gabriel Reservoir. They didn't speak a word of English, and I have no doubt I was near one of their pot farms. After awhile they let me go. You gotta be careful when hiking in some of the more remote water canyons....
I don't know what it is, but I eyeball it almost every time I drive by there for the last dozen years or so. Please let us know what you find if you go exploring. Stop in the cafe and say hi to Mark and shorty and the gang. They're all pretty nice.
Thanks Bob. ...

Re: Pine Canyon

I've been exploring Pine Canyon as well, looking for the same possible trail you are. There is a branch of the old Lone Tree Trail which starts in Rubio Canyon and does go down into Pine Canyon just before the you reach the power lines. It heads down to an old sunken cement water structure and short...

Mystery Tunnel East Fork / Does Anyone Know What It Is?

On my last two trips to the East Fork I've seen a tunnel across the riverbed from the road, just slightly upstream the cafe you might be familiar with. I know this area is pockmarked with mines, but this looks more like a water tunnel. It's up about 50 feet on the side of a cliff and does look acces...
