Re: Middle Eaton Canyon exploration
Wow, those are some incredible shots. I've never seen that screened mailbox looking thing or the dome shaped structure. Is that a fireplace? Are those upstream from the Idlehour campground? The ladybugs are unbelieveable. That canyon is absolutely gorgeous in the winter season. https://eispiraten.co...

I also found this crushed baby rattlesnake in the East Fork parking lot, but I'm assuming there wasn't much left of the skull or the skeleton. I'm always amazed by snake skeletons that are reassembled in nature centers. Must take a lot of patience and know-how to do that. https://eispiraten.com/imag...

Re: Ring Tailed Cat
Wow, that's incredible that you actually found the external part of the horn. That's really rare. The first bighorn skull I found was still attached to the skeleton and I left it where it was. Still kicking myself for leaving it there, but it would have been a long, long hike out, and those skulls a...

Re: Vincent Gap to Bighorn Mine to Prairie fork and back 11/14/08
Fantastic find Bill. The mine at the bottom is called the Fenner Tunnel, part of the Bighorn family. It's a two level mine that only operated for about a year and is heavily shored up on the inside with some very dangerous cave ins. Someone dragged a tall ladder inside to get to the second level, al...

Re: Ring Tailed Cat
I used the more concentrated peroxide on a Bighorn skull. Worked great. But you're right, the 3% works just as good, just takes longer, This is what it looked like before I bleached it. Second one I've found in the East Fork. . https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/i411/albums/pp195/min...

Re: Ring Tailed Cat
Oh, wow. That is a GEM! You mean you didn't cut off the head and take it with you? It's already mostly dessicated, and would be very easy and not-very-gross to clean. And what is that, anyway? A coyote? I'm sure it's still there if I decide to go back before it snows. Didn't have an axe with me at ...

Re: Ring Tailed Cat
Beautiful cleaning job on the skull. You can superglue those teeth back in if you remember which sockets they fell out of. I saw an entire family of them in the daytime near the first falls in Eaton Canyon, and one near the same place at night. They're all over these mountains, though most will neve...

Re: Stanley-Miller Mine
You didn't find the mine, but it still sounds like a very productive outing. How deep was the mine in the Narrows? Those mines have an interesting history. Originally there were 12 patented claims. Supposedly five tunnels still exist, but two of them are clogged. Stanley was the miner, and Miller w...

Here's a recent photo of a dead one found on the East Fork Road. I've seen these in Eaton Canyon a few times, and in Monrovia Canyon, but it's rare to see them in the daytime. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/i411/albums/pp195/minefinder/Hikes/Bridge%20To%20Nowhere/IMG_9596_zpshrdi...

Bizarre Death In Glacier National Park

Re: Wonders of the East Fork (Add Your Photos)
I'm not exactly sure why those mines have Placer in their titles. My guess is that those were operations that started out as placer claims and later became hard rock mines when they got some money to finance the hard rock mining. Good question. OK, that makes sense. Where did you get the names of t...

Re: Wonders of the East Fork (Add Your Photos)
Nice! Terminology question: I thought that "placer" mining referred to filtering river sediments and "hard-rock" mining referred to filtering rock you break off hard ground. But you have photos of several shafts labelled as "placer" mines. So what does "placer&quo...

Nice shots of the PL & P.(Pacific Light & Power Trail) That trail was built in 1911. When you walked across the red rock cliff you were just above the Horseshoe Annex Mine. Really? I've looked for that mine before and couldn't find it. Some description I read says that it's on the West side...
