dima: Do you have a picture? We tried to climb Saucer a couple years ago. https://www.youtube.com/embed/mosqS9Oi5TQ I was able to get up on top of those falls a few years back. At first I tried the left side like you did. There was some rigging up at the top, but it looked pretty shaky. Then I came...

Awesome photo of the horn toad. I rarely see those anymore. The taters are hilarious.

Re: Searching For Artifacts Below The Big Horn

Possibly, I was thinking more of the vintage airplane tires from the 1940s. The one you show looks a little too narrow.

https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/photobucket/oi411/albums/pp195/minefinder/Mines/Big%20Horn%20Artifacts/29_zpsvffak15e.jpg To Tom Kenney - I wasn't thinking about it at the time, but you may be correct about the tire. I does indeed look like a plane tire, no tread, rounded, with a seam in the...

The legal pot is so expensive now illegal grows can sell it for half the price, tax free, using any pesticides they want. No store cost either.

Re: Reporting pot farms

I found one fairly close to Kelsey Mine. Fertilizer bags, PVC pipes coming out of the hillside, empty seedling containers and a mile long hidden trail and a lot of Mexican food trash. Looked like an old abandoned cartel farm. It was kind of unnerving looking for trip wires.

Re: Searching For Artifacts Below The Big Horn

Hugh Blanchard tried but never made it. There's a very scary washed out trail that goes along the edge of a cliff that you have to rope into. Also last time I was out there I noticed a bizarre waterfall blasting out of the side of the mountain further up the canyon. Looked like it was coming from a ...

Re: Searching For Artifacts Below The Big Horn

Never tasted a snow plant, but they grow like mushrooms, living on the bacteria in the soil. I've been to the area you speak of, south of the mine. There's an old mine way out there, impossible to reach, but you can see it across the valley from that shale area. The mine's name is the Oak Knoll or B...

Yeah, directly below it. Although at one point you have to cross over into another gully to get around a big dropoff.

Searching For Artifacts Below The Big Horn

On July 4th I finally got up the nerve to explore the canyon beneath Big Horn Mine. It's hella-steep, so I figured it would be easier to come from the bottom up. That's a long walk, starting in Vincent Gulch, going all the way to the end of Mine Gulch and then cutting up a massive rock wash, looking...

Thanks for the info. I noticed that they have a large one in front of the Ranger Station, but I think that one came from the North Fork. Supposedly the Indians in that area were a Serrano band (related to the Morongo tribe).

Nice find. How far in were those mortar rocks? Don't know if you're familiar with the story of San Sevaine Flats. It was the location where the murderous Mason Henry Gang kept their stolen horses in the 1860s. The name of that road is a misspelling of Pierre Sainsevain, who owned a vineyard in Cucam...

Amazing footage of the slide and how they're fixing it. They have to go from the top down. The road from Redbox up will be closed until November, but there is a long detour via Angeles Forest Hwy and Big Tujunga Road available to get around it. Check out the SPIDER vehicle they put up at the top of ...

A while back there was a post on this site about the Fenner Tunnel in the canyon below the main mine. I've done the whole canyon from top to bottom and still never found it, although I did find six ore carts and the ruins of an old cabin. If anyone else has been down there and seen it can you give m...

It's the best mine in the San Gabriels by far. I've been in it about eight times. I try to go a little deeper each time, but some areas are really sketchy.

Re: Mount Pacifico Lookout?

Interesting. That looks almost like a WWII plane spotting tower I saw at Beek's Place in the Santa Ana Mountains. I've noticed those rods in the rock up there and always wondered what they were. If you hike up from Mill Creek Summit there are a number of mines in that area, including the Monte Crist...
