Re: Laguna Coast Wilderness Park - Bobcat Sighting
We had one walk across our deck here in Newport Beach a few weeks back. There's a well documented case of "Babe" who lives in the Backbay area of Newport Beach: http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2 ... rhood.html

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails
By what standard do you judge "ridiculous"? Anyone who does anything in the wilderness puts the life and limb of rescuers in peril; lots of people don't need rescuing but some do. Why is this a situation where people clearly should be charged while people in other situations shouldn't be ...

Re: Eaton Canyon Trails
That is effing ridiculous. Anyone who does that and puts the life and limb of rescuers in peril needs to be charged for the extraction.
Stupid is as stupid does.

Re: Golden Trout Wilderness/Cottonwood lakes
Doubt there will be any bears up above the timberline - especially since the pickings are so easy at Whitney Portal. But - check with the Forest Service - Bear Cannisters are *required* in many areas up there. If so, no big deal - you can rent them up there for something like $5 a day. And yes - mos...

I trail run all the time, but I live in Orange County, so stick to the hills of the OC.
Re: Scouting?
Eagle Scout 1973. Cubmaster for my boys for a number of years (7?) and Asst Scoutmaster until my boys dropped out for athletics in High School. Scouting did more to build my love for the outdoors, teach me skills that I still use today, and keep me out of trouble than anthing except my parents. Love...

Re: Sheep Ridge and Canyon Solo (DVNP) (2010-12-11)
I don't always sleep well, though. Two years ago I was also in DVNP on a solo backpack, very nearly on the winter solstice. Perhaps like most, when sleeping out I typically wake up every so often, check my watch ("2am, 4 hours to go!"), go back to sleep, wake up, check my watch ("4:3...

Re: Mt. Whitney
Lots of people do it in a day. If you are in good physical shape, you should be able to do it. One thing you need to be careful about this time of year - make sure you take enough water at Trail Camp to make the five mile trek to the top and the five miles back down. There is a spring that flows on ...

Mt. Baldy Loop 5.25
Well, after being a long time lurker, I finally have something I can post on this forum! Back before middle age caught me in it's grasp, I used to ply the lower range quite often. But, middle age and middle body growth had me pretty much confined to remote control clicking for excercise up until a c...
