Re: SNOW - Questions, Forecasts & Reports About Snow

Hi,

Can anyone tell me where the snow patches start on the trail to Ontario Peak? Assuming Icehouse Canyon as the starting trail head.

I am heading up this weekend and am trying to determine the snow cover.

Thank you.

Is Water Turned On or Off at Mt. Wilson Summit?

Hi,

Does anyone know if the water fill spigots are turned "on" at the summit of Mt. Wilson? Last time I was up they were turned off for the drought.

Re: Henninger Flats water status?

Hi, I spoke with a Ranger at Henniger Flats on Feb 10th. He told me the lack of water in the water tanks from the drought caused them to crack on the inside. They are in need of repair. They hope to have them repaired sometime this year. I presume that even if it rains the water will remain turned o...

Re: Video – Browns Flat. Anyone make this trip recently?

Hi Walker, Thanks for the posting the links. Loved the photos from the 1930's and learning more about the Williams Fire. The trace trail stays directly on top of the ridge down to the yellow star. After the yellow star, except for a few trace signs the trail is gone. Between the yellow and red stars...

Video – Browns Flat. Anyone make this trip recently?

https://hbandrew.smugmug.com/Browns-Flat-Public/ Has anyone been to Browns Flat recently and actually made it? If so, please share your route. Yesterday I was stopped short by thick brush just shy of Browns Flat. I set out to from Cow Canyon Saddle to hike to Browns Flat. I hiked the ridge up to Su...

Re: Water Flow At Columbine Spring? (Icehouse Canyon)

I made the trip and Columbine Spring is flowing nicely. Fill rate of 1 liter in 20 seconds.

There is also solid water flow and a small waterfall about 1/4 mile up Lost Creek.

Re: Water Flow At Columbine Spring? (Icehouse Canyon)

Hi,

Can anyone confirm if there is water at Columbine Spring in Icehouse Canyon? I will be hiking up for the July 4th weekend.

Originally had a permit for two nights at Big Tree in the San Gorgonio Wilderness, but that campsite is no more.

Ridge Trailblaze from Bear Canyon to Mt. Disappointment Ridge

Yesterday I trail blazed up and down two ridges that I spotted on a previous hike to Mt. Lowe. Both looked like nice climbing and worth a return visit. One of the highlights of the day was a video I captured of a hawk, which I included in the slide show. Trailhead was Eaton Saddle, and I began the d...

Video Tour of Pine Flat – Just Below Iron Mountain Summit

This past Friday I hiked up to Iron Mountain. A flat patch of ground South East of the summit caught my attention. Loaded with thick, tall pines it looked very inviting and worth a visit. I wondered how often this flat of Pines gets visited? But first I went hiking along the San Antonio Ridge to the...

Falling Rock Cnyn, Ontario, Bighorn, Cuc Pk, Sheep Flat

Saturday I hiked this route and it was a great workout. 7,200 feet of elevation gain in 12.2 miles roundtrip. Lots of scenery and varied terrain. I started at Icehouse Canyon Trailhead and hiked up Falling Rock Canyon to Ontario Peak. I was surprised to find no one else on Ontario Peak mid-morning. ...

Re: Thunder Ridge

Hi Taco, Thanks for the reply. Maybe I'll try one of the chutes on the west side, and then explore the ridge from the top down. I'll see how far I can get, realizing I will most likely need to turn around at some point. I like to explore steep terrain for the first time from top to bottom. Less chan...

Thunder Ridge

Last Saturday I hiked the route described below, and for the entire trip I was studying Thunder Ridge to see if it is possible to hike from the parking lot of Icehouse Canyon to Thunder Mountain via Thunder Ridge. The lower half of Thunder Ridge, from the parking lot to Cedar Glen Campsite, looks qu...
