Re: The Andrew Curtis Tungsten Mine
Those guys in Thompson ranch literally block access to the canyon below and I personally believe it's to keep people out of their canyon. Something fishy is going on... If that's a public road they don't have any legal standing to block it, even if it does run through their property. Property owner...

Re: Covid19-related closures
What does bug me a little is when I stop in at a ranger station to ask about conditions, and they not only don't know (because they don't get out on the trails), but they won't admit they don't know. I'd be willing to bet money that the people you talk to in the station haven't been on a trail in t...

Re: Covid19-related closures
Interesting that the Forest Order does not close anything in San Gabriel Canyon, the most crowded place in the Angeles NF. I guess the people who frequent the area have herd immunity that people who recreate elsewhere do not. ? I'm not sure how they intend to enforce this order since the Supervisor'...

Re: Mt Bliss, AirWest 706 and Fish Canyon
There is a signed trail through the quarry for hikers that is fenced in, we did out best to stay where we were supposed to as we passed through. In one or two places that wasn't an option, but we did the best we could. Once you pass the quarry from the trailhead, it's actually very easily passable....

Re: Mt Bliss, AirWest 706 and Fish Canyon
Here we have another example of property managers restricting normal access to an open area of the forest and using the excuse that the trail is not safe. The FS is trying to do this with the Gabrielino, and Vulcan/FS are doing this with Fish Canyon. In other places where trails are not safe, they ...

Anybody know how to trim back yucca quickly? Loppers work, but it takes a long time since you have to cut back every single tip. Is a machete better for this? https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/61e7EZucm6L._SL1500_.jpg Just cut the very tips off. Lets the plant live without much injur...

Re: Charging for rescues
"Extreme" is partly relative to skill level. For the giggling girls who recently got pulled out of Las Flores, following a trail was apparently an extreme challenge. I think our taxes should go toward saving lives in the mountains. But maybe there is a threshold of recklessness at which p...

Re: Old helicopter crash site in Bichota Canyon
That marker does seem to be generic. The description mentions a botched ridgetop helipad landing followed by a fall into the canyon. I've been to the area around the marker and followed an old road cut up to the south ridgeline. The grade in that particular vicinity doesn't seem likely to produce a...

Didn't notice when I was taking it. Might well be. I was thinking it might be a pigeon, but you don't see city pigeons that far away from civilization often. I do see ring necked pigeons occasionally, though.

Bichota Canyon Road from Pigeon Ridge Road (2-5-17)
There used to be a road that dropped down into Bichota Canyon from the Chamisal Mesa area on the Pigeon Ridge fire road. Since the Cabin Fire last year burned most of Bichota Canyon I figured it was a good time to go explore before it became overgrown again. Most of the road looked like this: https:...

Re: Old helicopter crash site in Bichota Canyon
I wonder if that point on the map is just a generic "Bichota Canyon" coordinate. I know for a fact the Forest Service records the locations of incidents in a very generic way like that today.

Several times we have had to rescue people belonging to a Bungee America party who were simply left behind several miles in when they couldn't keep up. That guy is a major ****.

Re: Old helicopter crash site in Bichota Canyon
Hmmm. I was up there this weekend to check out the road that used to go down into the canyon from the Pigeon Ridge road, but I only got about a mile in before I reached a huge washout with 10-foot vertical loose dirt walls. I did find an old overturned vehicle full of bullet holes. It resembled a Je...

If you saw a man with a mustache and a woman, that was the USFS employee that placed the locks. If you saw a fat guy in a light green Forest Service polo shirt with another guy with a radio then it was us. We we heading towards Hoegee's on the Upper Winter Creek around 14:00.

Users of ANF restrooms, bring your shovel. We saw guys in ANF T-shirts taking photos of these signs on the loos, so we think they had just placed them and were photographing the evidence: I think we crossed paths again. If it was the 8th around sunset, that was us. We were taking pictures b...

I've seen sandpaper work wonders on bark, or even a file. In a pinch I've used a very sharp knife to carefully scrape the graffiti off without leaving a visible mark.

Lye works wonders on some colors of spray paint. I've seen it lift silver paint off like with was watercolors, but it had no effect on black or red. Might be worth a try. As far as the environment goes it's pretty benign if neutralized with some muriatic acid. The reaction of the two produces salt w...

The FS should improve the Backbone, where it's truly hazardous, even in good weather. As far as I know the Forest Service has not done any work to maintain or improve trails in at least a decade. Almost all trail work you see in the Angeles is accomplished by volunteers with their own tools, time, ...
