Re: Bluecut Fire

Any examples? I don't doubt that some tactics like fire prescription could be advocated on both sides. But it might be for different reasons. Fire prescription to create a "healthy forest" is different than doing it for public safety or other strictly human benefits. It's the philosophica...

It is not a monopoly or system that developed through free exchange of ideas and values. Are you arguing that elections in the United States are not the result of free exchange of ideas and values? Also, environmental and conservationist theories have been around since at least the mid-1800s. Not a...

It's not like the importance of using fire is unknown to us. But the voices of history's lessons are drowned out by the modern screams of environmental and conservationist groups, whose first priorities have little or nothing to do with human welfare and survival. We can blame "climate change&...

I'm really hoping that the Chinese Tree of Heaven forest about 1 mile in was wiped out by the fire. I was readying plans to deal with that infestation. As long as we can get back in there within a year it will be relatively easy to kill new Tree of Heaven growth.

There are also these online repositories of historical photographs. Very cool. I can spend hours looking through this stuff.

I haven't done any research on this road, so the reason for its existence is still a puzzle to me. It dead-ends at the Point. Maybe there was a cabin or lookout post. The road only appears in the 1968, 1975, and 1995 editions of the USGS maps. Prior to that there was the Garcia Trail that followed ...

I was on that road about 2:00 pm Saturday. Didn't go real far before I decided I didn't want to do it in the Prius. It wasn't so bad I couldn't do it, but I had to go slow enough that I didn't want to take that long to see what was going on at Guffy.

Skill level doesn't matter? That is an absurd statement. Someone with the knowledge of the terrain and the climbing and bushwacking skills of individuals like say, Sean, Willie, and Dima would have a much better chance of extricating themselves from entrapment by fire than the average day hiker. An...

Another example of someone expecting the government to bail them out when they get into trouble. Venturing into wild areas can be potentially dangerous. I'm not understanding the whole FS vs. Monument land argument. "Monument" is not an agency that owns or manages land. It's merely a classification of Federal land. The FS manages both the Angeles Forest and the Monument within. And now they have free reign to eliminate fee-free roadside p...

And since the land grabbers couldnt manage an acre by themselves, they just sue the forest service to follow their orders. The forest service needs to make a concerted effort to re-establish the original trail. Maybe even post a ranger on weekends to enforce staying on trail. Of course, it will never happen. Took another hike up the Bear Creek trail today. It was a beautiful day for hiking - clear and cool. https://i.sli.mg/AMKTim.jpg I'm pretty sure those poppies are parishii. They don't have the expanded rim on the receptacle like californica. See below for an illustration of the difference. https://i...

Also, if anyone's interested in nerding out on poppies, apparently the seeds of E. parishii are also different than E. californica.

Thanks! I've been up there a couple of times, but come to think of it both times were in the winter so poppies wouldn't be out. I lost a flashlight up at the top where the road ends in heavy brush and you hike up a firebreak to the top of the ridge.

They do look a bit like parishii. Ill have to check the receptacles for an expanded rim (telltale californica trait) the next time I'm up there. The ease of germination will also be a good indicator of wildness since cultivated varieties have generally lost their response to stratification. If you h...
