Re: Bluecut Fire
Any examples? I don't doubt that some tactics like fire prescription could be advocated on both sides. But it might be for different reasons. Fire prescription to create a "healthy forest" is different than doing it for public safety or other strictly human benefits. It's the philosophica...

Re: Bluecut Fire
It is not a monopoly or system that developed through free exchange of ideas and values. Are you arguing that elections in the United States are not the result of free exchange of ideas and values? Also, environmental and conservationist theories have been around since at least the mid-1800s. Not a...

Re: Bluecut Fire
It's not like the importance of using fire is unknown to us. But the voices of history's lessons are drowned out by the modern screams of environmental and conservationist groups, whose first priorities have little or nothing to do with human welfare and survival. We can blame "climate change&...

I'm really hoping that the Chinese Tree of Heaven forest about 1 mile in was wiped out by the fire. I was readying plans to deal with that infestation. As long as we can get back in there within a year it will be relatively easy to kill new Tree of Heaven growth.

There are also these online repositories of historical photographs. Very cool. I can spend hours looking through this stuff.

Re: POIs on Glendora Ridge
I haven't done any research on this road, so the reason for its existence is still a puzzle to me. It dead-ends at the Point. Maybe there was a cabin or lookout post. The road only appears in the 1968, 1975, and 1995 editions of the USGS maps. Prior to that there was the Garcia Trail that followed ...

I doubt they will. They had to rescue hikers several times during the fire and I think they're just acting to stop that from happening again.

I was on that road about 2:00 pm Saturday. Didn't go real far before I decided I didn't want to do it in the Prius. It wasn't so bad I couldn't do it, but I had to go slow enough that I didn't want to take that long to see what was going on at Guffy.

Re: Reservoiir Fire @ Hwy39 Morris Dam
Skill level doesn't matter? That is an absurd statement. Someone with the knowledge of the terrain and the climbing and bushwacking skills of individuals like say, Sean, Willie, and Dima would have a much better chance of extricating themselves from entrapment by fire than the average day hiker. An...

Another example of someone expecting the government to bail them out when they get into trouble. Venturing into wild areas can be potentially dangerous. Things can go wrong in the back country and you can't just dial 911 and expect an ambulance to pull up and rush you to the hospital. You either ha...

Re: Adventure Pass lawsuit settlement
I'm not understanding the whole FS vs. Monument land argument. "Monument" is not an agency that owns or manages land. It's merely a classification of Federal land. The FS manages both the Angeles Forest and the Monument within. And now they have free reign to eliminate fee-free roadside p...

And since the land grabbers couldnt manage an acre by themselves, they just sue the forest service to follow their orders. The Forest Service works by refusing to do anything about anything until forced to do so. They won't even comply with their own forest plans until sued. I think it's worth noti...

Why is enforcing the law considered a bad thing, especially laws directly involving safety (like speed limits)? I wish there were twenty times more cops enforcing traffic laws with fines double what they are now. The number of brainless idiots who drive like their having a bout of 'roid rage is out ...

Re: Baldy holiday
The forest service needs to make a concerted effort to re-establish the original trail. Maybe even post a ranger on weekends to enforce staying on trail. Of course, it will never happen. That's because almost every single additional dollar the Angeles gets for staff goes into hiring more people to ...

Re: Poppy Project
Took another hike up the Bear Creek trail today. It was a beautiful day for hiking - clear and cool. https://i.sli.mg/AMKTim.jpg I'm pretty sure those poppies are parishii. They don't have the expanded rim on the receptacle like californica. See below for an illustration of the difference. https://i...

I'll check it out.
Also, if anyone's interested in nerding out on poppies, apparently the seeds of E. parishii are also different than E. californica.

Re: Poppy Project
Thanks! I've been up there a couple of times, but come to think of it both times were in the winter so poppies wouldn't be out. I lost a flashlight up at the top where the road ends in heavy brush and you hike up a firebreak to the top of the ridge.

They do look a bit like parishii. Ill have to check the receptacles for an expanded rim (telltale californica trait) the next time I'm up there. The ease of germination will also be a good indicator of wildness since cultivated varieties have generally lost their response to stratification. If you h...

I don't have a picture from my last trip because it was foggy and wet so all the poppies were closed up. One good example is the photo AW posted in https://eispiraten.com/viewtopic.php?t=6243 Local poppies don't have to be all yellow to be true locals, but if they're close to a road or suburbia they...

I'm on a mission to collect small samples of local poppy seeds to grow inside screened enclosures (to prevent genetic contamination by pollinators) and produce larger batches of seed from our genetically unique local strains. The famous California poppies are large orange flowers that blanket the An...

Bald Eagle Nest in San Gabriel Canyon
For the last few weeks I've noticed a crowd of photographers with very expensive equipment (not amateurs) constantly set up at a turnout near the San Gabriel Dam. I assume this is the same nest:

Surprise surprise. This guy has two prior felonies and was last sentenced to two years in January 2015, but apparently he got an early release and was released in October. I like the earlier dates so there's still snow in the chute from Trail Crest down to Trail Camp. It makes the return take about 15 minutes instead of an hour.

Thanks for the excellent trip report. The last time I tried that hike it was about 110°F and I didn't last long before giving up. I don't know if it happens every winter, but one winter back in the 1990's I was camping at Spring Camp and it appeared to be a wintering spot for ladybugs. There were mi...

Most of the positive examples mentioned here started as individual private parcels or enterprises grandfathered in from another era when such things were undertaken on a smaller scale and with a less heavy-handed approach than today. A great number of such sites have been lost. I often wonder what ...
