Re: Mt. Whitney Mountaineers Route Attempt, 7-Sept-2008
The Final 400 isn't too bad if it was dry. I hear ya. A couple years ago I did it, and there was leftover snow in areas, hail in all of the footholds and handholds, and all the rocks were wet. I had to brush the hail out and move slowly. The traverse was solid ice with a very narrow and icy walkway...

Wanted: Snowshoeing/Climbing Backpack
This winter I'm thinking about buying a backpack for snowshoeing and then alpine climbing in the spring. I figure a used one would save me a lot of money. Something big enough to hold important stuff, small enough to travel light.

Could you imagine the electric bill? It might work in a walk-in freezer. Just keep tossing water on a wall until you get a thick ice layer... Anybody work at a grocery store? (And don't mind getting fired.)

Fight On, You may find that you can mountain bike sooner than hiking again. So at least that's getting outdoors. Fun downhills too.

Did you miss this? And "FIGHT ON" is the USC slogan. Has nothing to do with anything else. Don't think you'd want me on a SAR team. I'd probably leave you out there to follow some other lost soul's misplaced ducks until you perish....and then bury your body in one of those Texas grave mou...

It starts further up the road and begins with downhill on asphalt, then makes a sharp right turn.

Re: i got some questions about the gear you guys use
I bought the Raven Pro but wished I had bought the Raven because when there's boulders and trees, it's inevitable that the shaft will get scratched unless you want to be extra careful and keep putting it away and pulling it out. The Raven also has a longer head, which would help better when it's slu...

Awesome! I love the Verdugos and Griffith Park and Venice/Santa Monica beaches. There's tons of others I have not done yet.

Re: The Verdugos -- Fire Warden's Grove Loop
Well the top comes out at one of those resort chairs near a radio tower. If you drive up Magnolia to the end, go left, then right up I think Harvard. It starts in that park near the golf course. It's at the sharp bend. If you reach the restaurant you've gone too far. It's really steep with switchbac...

I really like the wildwood canyon trail. It would be nice to have a message board or section dedicated to LA trails.

Looks like fun. Are you doing all of these with a single ice axe or two?
