Re: Magic at Angeles Crest

The abandoned roads around Mt. Akawie (Buckhorn Peak) are shown on Open Cycle Maps: http://caltopo.com/m/91T1 Don't read too much into that. I added those from the aerial imagery, and I don't know anything. oh ok cool. Yeah but those roads are definitely there. From the ACH theres a crashed up yell...

Daniel, I know this post is over 3 years old, but time and time again I would return to it to reread your beautiful words in recollecting memories of this cabin. I don’t know if you will even see this, but its worth a try. I wanted to follow up on your inquiry. Were you able to obtain any photos fr...

Mt. Burnham via Lodgepole Picnic Area (HPS Route #3)

Anyone taken Lodgepole Picnic area to Mt. Burnham? its a pretty sweet route that wastes no time heading up to the peak. https://eispiraten.com/images-archived/c2.staticflickr.com/9/8654/28176757793_97de08164f.jpg You would never know the trail starts here unless you read about it. https://eispiraten...

Re: Castle Rock Ruins

Saint Andrew's Abbey is a lovely place to visit. Anyone can stop there. I always make a point of stopping there if I'm in the area. The monks were originally stationed in China but kicked out after the Communist revolution and have lived here since the 1950s. If you drive up the road and park at th...

Re: Castle Rock Ruins

Edit: Also....I was at Twin Peaks saddle this year....couldnt find anything historical. Its definitely NOT on the northern side of Devils Canyon/saddle. The southern side is pretty large acreage, and all I saw was from previous visitor stayovers....something like 4-5 fires close, but not visible fro...

BLM records online: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/search/de ... ypeIndex=3 You Just need the Township, Range, or maybe a name. And I pulled up some historic patents from the Township/Range/Section under the BLM records though they might not be complete: Oh wow. Where does one get these records?

Re: Castle Rock Ruins

I've seen ruins scattered all throughout that back area up into the Angeles Forest. I think its Valyermo, Llano, Juniper Hills. Areas where lots of previous ranches used to exist (and still do). I bet theres potential for some cool exploration. Cool thanks for the info. I bet it was some fire that t...

That looks super fun! Which sections have a trail? Vincent Gap down to the river? What about between there and Fish Fork? Hi Dima! Sorry I was never notified of comments on this TR. Correct, only from Vincent Gap to the canyon floor. You can follow a use trail but it disappears so often and the can...

Cabins, falls, mines in East Fork

Got around to backpacking this classic canyon with some friends recently! We had to set up a date in advance to accommodate the weekend warriors. There were a total of 12 of us, ready to revel in the spectacular East Fork Country. The shuttle is by far the most troublesome aspect of the planning. We...

Re: Cabin ruins across Newcombs?

Somewhat related, but has anyone ever located the site of William Sturtevant's summer camp near the Twin Peaks saddle? I don't know that there's anything still there that would identify it, but it'd be kinda cool to find the spot and check it out. I totally wrote about Sturtevant on my blog post he...

There may have been some error by Blanchard on the name "Bell-Hartman" as old mining records term it as the "Boatwright Prospect".

Upper Big Tujunga....adventure

Last weekend we decided to try and hike Upper Big Tujunga. It's a 3-mile thru hike starting from Big Tujunga Road Bridge to the Colby day-use area. Although we couldn't find any current trip reports of anyone having recently hiked Upper Big Tujunga besides Christopher E. Brennen's 16-year old report...
