MASTODON PEAK AND BEYOND
Last Wednesday, I hiked with my crazy Wednesday crew. We met in Joshua Tree at the Lost Palms Oasis trail. The initial plan was to hike to the top of Mastodon Peak first, but we decided to check out the cool, rock outcropping like we did in the past, just in case we ran out of time. I've been on thi...

MILLARD FALLS & DAWN MINE
Last week on Wednesday, I met some of my hiking buddies at Chaney Trail. It was a first time for the entire group hiking to Dawn Mine. Since I've been chasing waterfalls, I decided to make it a loop hike saving the falls for last. The trail was restored about a year ago by the Restoration Legacy Cre...

Re: Switzer Falls
Royal falls is in the middle of Royal Gorge, below Switzers. It's a short (<10ft) drop into a big pool. The walls on both sides are steep and rocky, so getting around is tricky. If you were looking at a fall from below, and it was easy to get around from above, then you weren't at Royal falls. From...

Re: Switzer Falls
It's unclear to me where you were when you found the second waterfall. If you climbed above Switzer Falls, then you should have been traveling *up* the canyon, not down it. Were you heading upstream from Switzer Falls or downstream? Downstream, I believe, is Royal Gorge, but I've never been to it, ...

I'm still on my quest chasing waterfalls and mushrooms. So far waterfalls are flowing very nicely. However, the mushroom hunt has been scarce on my last two adventures. On Wednesday, I met my hiking buddies at the trailhead. It was short but hiking along the Gabrielino trail and the Arroyo Seco was ...

ESCONDIDO FALLS
Still chasing waterfalls, I hiked to Escondido Falls. A beautiful multi-tiered waterfall.
However, I'm too lazy to write another full report.
You can read about it here.

Jeff-the falls are bone dry during spring and summer.
Sometimes there is water trickling below in the canyon.

After Zuma and Newton Falls I continued chasing waterfalls and mushrooms the next day in OC. I joined two friends hiking the San Juan loop. Both had never seen the falls. So I was more than happy to lead them on another adventure. Surprisingly, I found quite an array of mushrooms and lots of new spe...
